I've had my 4870x2 for a little less than a year now, and a few days ago it started showing artifacts & would constantly crash during games and reboot the system randomly. It's always idled at around 65-70C and I've never bothered to overclock. I changed the fan speed manually and now it idles at 50-55C and 60-70 in game, resulting in significantly fewer crashes (I've only had one thus far, in-game, with artifacts). I still can't help but feel like there's something wrong with it and I'm reluctant to play any games before I figure out the problem.

So, is there some sort of diagnosis that I can run my card through to find out whether the problem is fixable, or must I helplessly await the inevitable demise of a $500 card?

well, at first I thought that 70C was a bit much myself, but I did some research and the consensus was that it was normal temp for such a card. The fan speed is dynamic, meaning it would increase under more stress, therefore my temp never really exceeded 70C even while in game.

Oh and mind you the fan sounds nothing short of a jet engine when it's on max.

Who cares as long as it protects your investment? I don't trust dynamic control tbh. 100% all the time.

Have you use compressed air to blow out the dust and fur that accumulates in the fan of the graphics card?

Yes, his card did overheat, but your second statement is incorrect.

These cards are designed to withstand temperatures up to 105c. Most cards start developing artifacts around 90C. I've even seen them at 81-82. The dynamic fans do this, as they ramp up too late.

Don't worry about your card, just keep an eye out on your cards temperatures. (Logitech G15 LCD ftw) Judging by your temps now, you set your fan at 50-60%. I personally would increas it until you notice it. (I kept my GTS G92s at 50%, and I keep my 9800GTX(s) at 60%.)

Certain games will heat your gpus up more than others. Even in BF2 Sandbox 1.0, where you can place unlimited amounts of firespots, you can overheat you card. I got a 9800GTX up to 85C with that (Started artifacting). And I have above average airflow in my case (2 120mm intakes, 3 exhaust (120, 90, 90) and one 90mm dedicated to the GFX.

you know what, I think I got a little too nuke-happy in Garrys mod. Would explain all the crashes. lol. Hopefully the damage isn't permanent. I'm going to keep my fan at 80% for now, which yields about 44C while idle.

so much for keeping the fan on max the whole time... it gave out completely in-game, but is working again after a restart.

Omega, how old is your card? nvm.

I'm going to throw the dice and say its age wearing, dust, heat damage or probably all of them. But as sniper said, as long as you're not over the threshold you should be fine.

Keep that fan on 100% until you swap, its on you best interest.

Why the FUCK would you keep the fan at 100%? Its loud as a heli taking off in ur room and quite franky its not even ment to run at 100% all the time.

Its normally somewhere around 40-50% in normal use, the only time card shoud run at 100% is its post diagnostic (quick spin to max at every bootup) and when the temps go over 100c.

Way to fuck up the fan if you use it at 100% all the time + its loud as hell.

Edit: If your card doesn't run at stock fanspeed and clocks without artifacting, its faulty, and you should RMA it and not being stupid and use 100% fanspeed.

It might not even be your cards fault, PSU can be giving unclean power resulting in funky shiat. What PSU you got? And what drivers you have atm? Is anything overclocked in your PC?

edit: oh and AMD statemend about maximum temps the RV870 can take talked about 105c-115c. Oh and idle temps for X2 are hot, around 65c-70c, nothing to worry about.

youve kind of answered your own question... youve increase the cooling and the card stopped crashing....
To totally and cheaply keep it from crashing, buy more fans and a bigger heatsink, make sure the card is securely connected and is not sitting barely touching. If the card still works it has not died

Why not RMA? after all that soudns like its more than a cooling issue and you are talking about expensive gfx card. If he keeps getting artifacts even after cooler change: MEGAOWNED

100% on a GTX 280 is pretty silent... (For me anyways )

My GTX 280 marks his first anniversary (My entire computer actually.) without any wear. I don't get your part about fucking the fan at 100%.

I take it you have never had ATi X2.... Nviida fans are designed to run close at their max fanspeed unlike ATis.

To be honest, my single 4870 any fan speed over 40%(I have it at 31% now with idle temps of 52c) and it's loud as fuck, no one would want to listen to that shit. And that's not an X2 so it won't be as hot as the X2, which you need to put the fan even higher to cut down the temps.

I think you should do what Panzer says and RMA it, when comes to a good card like that, you don't wanna just leave it then it fucks you in the ass and you have to buy a new one.

The taught of not having the card for a small period of the time is the worst thing, but in the long run it's worth it!

Why are refreshes and renames fucking you in the ass? Nvidia dropped the price on the 9800GTX+ -> GTS 250. The renames were only to move more units of the very successful G92 core. Whats wrong with that? Nvidia did not mark up and rename. Hell, GTS 512 -> 9800GTX would have been a good upgrade. I only realized this because EVGA sent back a GTX when I rma'd a GTS 512. They are cherry picked G92 cores with faster memory. (100mhz higher core and 200mhz higher mem oc on my new one.)
