Seriously Mitch, QQ.

You want a car but you don't want to save, you don't want to wait 8 months.  A lot of people want to make more money and are willing to work for it, not just you.  Some well-paying job isn't just going to fall in your lap, you are 17 without a diploma yet and really minimal job skills.  Suck on the teat of minimum wage, stop spending so much and save your money or quit bitching.  Life's tough, deal with it.

Why the hell are you working minimum wage? Dude, just go cut grass or something. Undercut the professionals by 10 bucks and your good. Were living on 1/4 acre lots around here and I can bring it 35$ a lawn, for an hours work, thrown in a couple odd jobs and its maybe 20 hours a week, 800 bucks or so, and if your still pressed for cash, you can go back to your minimum wage job at the supermarket to add on a few more hours.

Exactly.

Also, look for a savage yard, my dad works in auto salvage, he got a 1998 Jeep Cherokee (2 door, 2WD) Salvage Recovery for $900. It can be pretty cheap and you could get a decent car for cheap. They don't have as good of resale value, but they're decent usually.

Mitch lives upstate. Public Transportation is not really that good.

Also if he is making minimum wage while living/working in NYC then he deserves minimum rape.

Surely you can get a cheaper car than 3-4k.
Thats double the most I've ever spent on a used car.

Go to a car dealership and go the service department and ask around. Some of the people who work in car service pick up half dead cars fix them and resale them. You could get a decent working car for around $1000 and slowly put more money on it repairing and upgrading things.

You already have a car. It may not be the nicest, but it runs still.

Just keep saving as much as you can. The best way to do that is to immediately transfer like half your paycheck or something into a savings account and do not touch it at all. You should be able to live off 500 dollars a month.

When I was in school I was only working enough to make 500 bucks a month. I was able to pay my truck insurance, 40 dollars a week in gas, parking at school (3 dollars a day) and also have enough money left over to party and keep the GF happy. I can't really see you having much more expenses then I did.

Just manage your money better. I found that my real money killer during this time was buying fast food and shit. Stop if you are and just go home and eat.

Don't do this. Its an endless money hole.

The money that you will spend repairing it and or upgrading it you could just save and buy something nicer that's not gonna break down every second week.

You're 17. Everyone's first car is a POS unless their parents bought them it. Appreciate the fact that you do have a car currently to drive around, cause probably a lot of kids your age don't.

Good for you.  My humble advice? Buy a beater and drive it until the wheels fall off.  Save your $$, and offer to pick up extra shifts from the slackers that surround you.

Start a small business cutting grass or go buy a pressure washer.  Better yet buy a beater pickup and offer your services as a light duty mover.  Good luck and congrats for taking on personal responsibility.  Now go kick ass.

8-9 months is a long ass time to save for a car, not to be unrealistic about it, but  I dont want to wait that long. Im using my stepmoms old car which has 240,000 miles on it and a broken frame, and honestly im pretty confident itll be dead 9 months from now.

I want to make more money, I dont mind working for it either.
umm you already have a car? lol i wouldn't bitch tbh. just live with it and wait till you get a new one. at least you already have a car available to use
Wait... You've all ready got a beater on death row?  Well you've got another 8 months to do the above listed.  Hell man, I thought you were saving up for your own first auto.

With the magic of google I found this....
New york govt auctions
Some one mentioned auctions earlier. My brother in law buys cars from auction all the time. While its a bit of a mixed bag, you can often find a really good cheap car.

Prices some of these cars sold for
This gives you an idea of what you might expect prices to go for. Like I said, its a mixed bag, but it may be worth a look.
In fact just google New York car auction or similar and you will find heaps. Good luck.

This equals $540. I don't get a lot of tax taken out, so were gunna just call it $500.

Thats $1000 per month.

A decent car costs around 3-4000 dollars.

I wish i could get a loan, that way i can use the car while i pay for it. But im seventeen and banks dont talk to seventeen year olds.

Plus. It's unrealistic to say that im saving my entire paycheck. While i dont have any mandatory bills to pay, i still end up spending money.

Which basically doubles the length of time it will take to save for a nice car.

Fuck me. This is gay.

What are some ways to make more money? Im already working away most of my days. I hate my hours. 10-8 some days, other days just 3-8. Usually 5 days a week.
Running a car is very very expensive, I just pretty much spent 1/3 of the value of my car to get it registered, buy CTP, fix up a few things, replace a few things etc. Ask yourself do you really need this car, especially as you'll be buying a second hand one?

Seriously Mitch, I know you're impatient but work, earn and buy. Don't look for shortcuts, ESPECIALLY not finance companies or bank loans because they will bite into your nutsack and tear out your balls. You're a good bloke really Mitch and I wouldn't wish that kind of thing on you.

You have a car, a shitty one maybe but you're 17 and you have a car. That's good, you're doing a damn sight better than me already and I'm 21. Surely this can hold you off while you save money to buy a car. There is no hurry. You're living at home, you have most of your expenses paid for you, this is the ideal time to save for something the good old fashioned way. It will be worth so much more if you work and save for the car on your own.
