Interesting. It's no surprise that five of these are in the ME. I would love to visit any one of these.

Wouldn't have thought Portugal would have a city in there.

Could of sworn Baghdad was really old also.

I'm willing to bet that there are villages in Africa that are even older, but not large enough to qualify

Precisely.. it would be impossible to track the villages as opposed to a city that was officially founded.. A list like this is never perfect.

Ningbo was one of China's oldest cities, with a history dating back to 4800 B.C
6800 years beats out a few of those.

Maybe because it was not called Ningbo. The area now known as Ningbo was once part of several other areas including ‘Yin’, ‘Mao’ and ‘Gouzhang’. It wasn't until 1381 that the city got the name Ningbo. I don't know if that is reason enough to exclude it from the list, but I understand the reason it may have been.

The history of Ningbo can be traced back to 7,000 years ago. The discovery of Hemudu Neolithic Culture Ruins proves that Ningbo was one of the first places in the world for cultivating rice. In the Xia Dynasty (about 2,000 B.C.), Ningbo was called ‘Yin’. In the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 B.C.), Ningbo was a part of the State of ‘Yue’. In the Qin Dynasty (221-206 B.C.), the place called Ningbo today covered ‘Yin’, ‘Mao’ and ‘Gouzhang’, three counties of Kuaiji Shire. In the Tang Dynasty (618-907 A.D.), the place was named ‘Mingzhou’. In 821, the local district government moved to the place where three rivers joined and city walls were built, which marked the beginning of the city. In 1381, the 14th year of the period of the Emperor Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 A.D.), the city got its current name ‘Ningbo’, which means ‘the calm wave’.

There's alot of cities around the world that have been around for thousands of years. I think the difference is that these particular cities have been big/important for quite a long time instead of being a simple settlement that grew and became popular over time which is the general story for most cities in the world.

Still, they probably did miss out a few, but they also had a set criteria to decide on how to do the list.

Possibly Zurich (grew from bronze age settlements there).

I don't think much of the accuracy of this list.....

What about all the places in Egypt like Crocodopolopodis (or whatever they called it), what about the rest of the ME, I thought Kirkuk was supposed to be very, very old.

I think it depends on what you classify as northern, i mean London is about 2000 years old and i don't think there were many real cities in europe as they were mostly nomadic tribes i think or communities that were solely farmers.

Though i could certainly be wrong.

Man that was some interesting reading, I liked that!

I wonder what the oldest city in the world is, even if it didn't survive the years but I wonder what the world's first town/city was.
