Reading this story makes me ashamed. To me, this is further proof of the declination of American morality and society and that we, as a nation, are doomed staying on this path.

The exchange student program is a wonderful thing, and for the US to earn this black eye is quite disturbing.

I just had Donnie as our exchange student.

We were very mean to him. Hopefully he'll tell everyone to stay away from America cuz we're all just a bunch a pretentious fat assholes

On a more serious note. My family had 2 Japanese exchange students when I was about 8 years old. I remember my parents having to go through extensive interview processes before they were allowed to be a host family. I wonder what happened with these kids and how the host families slipped through the cracks or if the laws have changed all together.

"It's self-regulated, unmonitored, under-reported," Grijalva said. "Students being raped, placed in the homes of convicted felons, placed in the homes of registered sex offenders, come to the United States and lose 20, 30, 40 pounds."
That's pretty sick.

If it's any consolation it's completely unrepresentative of what normally happens in 99.9% of exchanges.

Now I'm aware that this isn't the point of the thread, but what was stopping them from eating and drinking at school, or buying their own food?

I don't know about the parents of these kids, but if my kids went through one of these programs (friend did this in Paris), I'd know real fast if my kids went hungry or were abused.  It wouldn't take months before I would find out.

The story does seem a mite odd.

I have friends that are trying to bring three students in, I believe they get $800.00 per month per student. It is to buy food and school supplies and pay room and board.
In Bible study last week they suggested that as a good way to bring in extra cash during the depression. I can see where this is ripe for abuse.

I see, so bible study suggests you rip off the tax payer, and neglect an exchange student by spending money meant for him/her in order to artificially supplement your own income.

Well that figures. Gotta love Christians

agreed, however, one kid did say he did not report back to his parents because he didn't want then to worry.

Let's see.  Make do with malnutrition and dehydration so my parents won't worry.  Uhuh...

Seems to definitely be abuse in this case, but still, come on.  Get out if it's bad.  But methinks kids/parents may have been concerned about the money spent to send the kids in the first place.

Just Googled to get some numbers.  Australian to USA.

  Semester January / August $A 9,550
  Academic Year August $A 10,550
  Calendar Year January $A 10,550

The question I have is...  why is the State Dept. doing this?  That's great if people want to come here and study or learn about American life, but there's no reason why taxpayer money should be involved.

This is something that should be a completely private sector affair, so that legal liabilities are not muddled when groups like the Aspect Foundation screw up.
