Here I am, on a very chilly 9 degrees Celsius night pondering what to do with myself on a night off from work. It's cold, quiet and not much else to do, most of my friends are working or cannot be stuffed organising anything on a night like tonight.

I jump onto BF2s to have a lurk like I do often, when it seems fairly quiet, i decide to have a gander at some old threads, specifically on Trackr. It was quite amusing to read how Trackr was going to be the next big thing, the progression from BF2s to a more open, general topical gaming website that targets a larger audience.

Yet, here we all sit, over 1 year since trackr's more public inception, BF2s still thriving on it's most hardcore members and Trackr merely a ghost town of an idea that simply dissolved into nothing. Why? Was it the fact Chuy never went ahead with the idea of forcing BF2s to a close and remaining as an archive and forcing members to post at Trackr? Was it the lack of PR? The lack of leadership? The website itself?

I had a read over The Open Trackr? Thread over at Trackr to see the thoughts on what was going on when it was posted.. 38 weeks 3 days ago. People agreed it was time to open, but not before a little 'spring cleaning' to spruce up some parts of the site and get it ready for some kind of official opening. But then, nothing. Nada. The site supposedly went 'live' and pretty much went downhill.

So, I want to give it a shot. I want to help bring the community alive, I don't like seeing a website that Chuy, the Mod team and associates worked so hard on just sitting there gathering dust.

Lets take a look back at the project and it's accomplishing goal to see what was supposed to happen and work from there:

Why is this happening?
[BF2s] community tags in TF2, CSS and COD4 don't make sense. With community servers to be run in these games, we need a unified tag/name to operate under. By switching from a moniker tied to BF2 we can coherently expand the community without the name lockin.

What will happen to the BF2s forums?
They will remain in place, but will be closed to both posts and new registrations. You will still be able to login so that you may "edit" posts to grab the old source text.

Will trackr grow and provide forums for the latest games?
Yes. Obviously not every game that is released otherwise we would have thousands of sections.
I believe these are the sections to start from. So we can build a plan from this:

Goal: To eventually archive BF2s and move on to Trackr in a fluent and rewarding manner with as little misery as possible. ?

So we set a goal, then we look at the current situation, why is trackr not successful, what can we do to help trackr, what is wrong with the website (if anything?) and where can we go from here. Brainstorming, we need to find out what's wrong, what needs improving, what people want, what people don't want then process these ideas into a plan and prioritize & implement.

However, all of this can't happen without the assistance of the Moderators and the Admin Team (I'm looking at you Chuy/OH). This isn't an overnight process and I'm not suggesting we close BF2s anytime soon, but maybe start with feedback and work on from there, I mean, if this fails, which I hope for the sake of Trackr it doesn't, then we haven't lost anything and go back to square one. Lets give it a shot yeah?

“We must remember that one determined person can make a significant difference, and that a small group of determined people can change the course of history.”

I posted this in EE hoping to get the most traffic, move if necessary. I did have a search and most of the threads were about "trackr is dead lolz"...

1.Who are you ?
2.I have a feeling no one give a shit about trackr anymore.
3.I still don't like the way that trackr looks.
4.If you really want people to move to trackr then your gone have to ask the popular 1's to set an example. Other will soon follow.
5.Even if we do move to trackr, it wont make a difference. IT will be a new start for no apparent reason.

I still visit the temp bf2s forums now and then.

I can't sign in and the karma system doesn't work, but it's nice to know it's still up.

Cannot argue here, but the 'popular' people also need a reason and motivation to move there as well as the members.

It will be the start of expanding BF2s from the same small niche of posters into a bigger pond of fish, more people, more conversation, more fun..more profit?

BF2s just seems more organized in my opinion. The layout of the forum posts looks better here than a name with an array of icons to the right like it is on trackr.

Another simple XHTML site (or whatever it is we have now) with PunBB forums would be a better idea for trackr in my opinion.

Pretty sure chuy mentioned that there is no way to implement PunBB (What the BF2s forums run) into Drupal (The Content System that Trackr is built on)

This is good, thanks for sharing. I agree that Trackr and infact Drupal for that matter is complicated to work with. When building a site you want to make it easy and accessable to it's users, the more difficult it is to navigate and interact with the less likely people will want to return. I agree that running along with the CMS style of BF2s with forums similar to PunBB would be neat, or even taking the plunge with getting vBulletin or IPB if you're willing to spend on the licence then theme it up.

I think the idea behind drupal was to implement the 'Library' and other features like that. I think on paper those ideas were great and still are, but if you are going to scrap Drupal you need to find an alternate CMS that you can implement these ideas back into. It all comes down to whether or not Chuy wants to work off a pre-existing Content Management System or make his own like BF2s*.

* That's of course if any of this actually goes anywhere.

I think that instead of making it open to everyone [The Wiki], there simply needs to be active people to authorize the content, so it's not spammed with grabage.

Good, good, after working with it myself I can tell. What do we know from Chuy since this? Is he looking for a different CMS, working on his own or what?

How will moving to a new site help bring more people ? bf2s forums stopped being just about bf2 a long time ago, can't you just get a new domain, make the site less bf2 and more all around gaming and reviews or wot eva, but at the same time keep the forums. The way i see it, the forum has grown a lot and no longer maintans it roots in bf2. The sites needs to do the same.

I think it opened too late to be of any effect. The mass migration to other forums since, well whenever has pretty much caused bf2s to die down.

Unfortunate timing, Id say. Plus the addition to this is that people like the layout of bf2s. I went and saw trackr and it was really clustered together because it tried to fit so much content onto one page. This is pretty much what most gaming websites are like now, just clusters of sections which go further into realms of other realms. Bf2s is different because of its simplicity.

Now Im going to bed. Night night.

Valid. I see your point, but I think trackr had some unique ideas that BF2s doesn't have and unless Chuy and Co. want to establish these new features I think trying Trackr can't hurt. Ontop of that, BF2s has expanded somewhat, but the majority of posts are done by the same people day in and day out.

Tbh.

Add all the extra sections of trackR down one/both of the unused spaces on the current forums. But again, I don't know if Chuy can do that with the tools available.

There's about 1/3 of the space available on the forums thats just a border, really.
