OK I found out earlier today that my 2 year old son has been diagnosed with swine flu, scary stuff, even more worrisome is that I have a 10 day old baby daughter at home as well. So they have put my son on antivirals(tamiflu) & we have to take our daughters temp every 2 hours if it goes above 38 we have to phone for an ambulance & she has to go to intensive care, as soon i heard this i was shitting bricks tbh, now my son is as strong as an ox bless him, he eats healthy, drinks plenty of water but my daughter was premature & still now only just tips the 6lb mark.

So my question is has anyone here come in contact with Swine flu because i am interested to know how the sufferer is being dealt with because tbh the NHS here in the UK where I am don't seem to give a toss, now I understand that as health professionals they deal with this all day everyday so have become a little detached but seriously when i was told my daughter would have to go to hospital it was like the nurse was ordering a Big Mac.

But the kicker here is that my son caught it off my sister who is a year 1 teacher at a local primary school. She is now signed off work with confirmed swine flu. Should the entire populous be given the antivirals as a precaution its a 10 day course instead of 5 day if you actually have H1N1 & why the fuck aren't Mexico being held responsible for there lack of action in containing the original outbreak, they should at least have to help towards the cost of antivirals.

Also how would you face your sister know that she could hospitalise your new born kid?

First, that sucks.  Good news though for apparently it doesn't seem to be especially nasty on the youngins.  Was your hands frequently and keep high traffic surfaces sanitized as much as possible.  And stick to the doctors' orders about the temp taking.

As to you Sister.. She didn't knowingly infect him huh?

And good point, I wonder if Mexico has contributed anything to the word save this flu....

It's a strange disease, some people it hits hard, others it hardly bothers at all. Here's hoping your son and your sister are in the latter catagory.

Don't be too hard on your sister. She didn't know any more than you did. Had you known you/your kids wouldn't have been in contact with her and if she had known she would have told you. It's just a shitty thing that hapened, just remain vigilant and hope everythig turns out for the best.

H1N1 is a very-fast spreading flu.  Treat as you would normally treat a flu, except sanitize more carefully and frequently.

A few cadets I was running basic training with got H1N1.  They were sick for a few days, just like the normal flu.

Ahh. Look out for the kids. Swine flu + young kids =/= good.

Keep an eye out for them at all times.

Hope it all goes well.

Sorry to hear that, must be worse hearing that your child has it. And i wouldn't blame your sister either, you can't blame her for catching it.

Also, just out of interest, where in England are you from? I'm from the West Midlands which is the most affected area.

Cheers guys I appreciate the kind words. I spoke with my sister today & tbh she is pretty upset at the situation, I have reassured her that its not her fault its those pesky feral kids & the parents of the kids at the school she works at, she said this week alone 15 odd kids were sent home because they were presenting symptoms of Swine flu but there parents still sent them in anyway even though there has been loads of info sent out by the school about what to do. The fact is where she teaches (not far from Tunbridge Wells) most of the parents only have kids for the fucking benefit hand outs.
But so far littleun seems OK & my son is the same as every a complete energizer bunny although he is sleeping a lot during the day.

My advice to anyone if they think they are presenting flu like symptoms contact your doctor get the Tamiflu anti viral & put yourself under house arrest for a week & do your community a favour by not spreading it about like the  retard parents at my Sisters school.

A 1 in 50 chance of your kid dying is not good odds in my book, I know your were stating fact but like i said as a parent that don't sound good, if my newborn gets it there is no proper way to treat it is a hit & miss way of watering down the adult drug & administering it via a drip there are no set dosages for kids, my 2 year old is on the full adult dose & we have to break open the capsules & sprinkle it on to honey for my boy to take it so far has made him violently sick after the second dose now he seems OK & like i said he is his usual self.

I'm not having a go here Stryyker I really am not but no parent likes to be told that there is a chance albeit small that his kid/s could die.

Ok I do not want to make light of your sons illness but I do have a question, is this flu really any worse than any other flu or it media hype? Are you faced with any other concerns than you would be with a different strain?

A friend of mine works for the NHS. His clinic looks after 2500 people, and they expect 25 of them to die because of Swine Flu, or 1%. Now that sounds terrifying if you're the father I'm sure, but the chance is really very, very small. Bear in mind this includes people with prior illness and old people who are more susceptible to these things. He also tells me that basically it's exactly the same as bog standard flu, only it's a hell of a lot more contagious. So if your child had regular flu he would have the same odds, it's just more likely that he'd catch it.

Hope that helps a little, I don't want to bullshit you and say it's all going to be ok, but those are some slightly more real world based statistics so you get a better picture. It's not anywhere near as bad as the media is making out, so I hope that takes a bit of the load off your chest.

As i said in the OP my son will be fine I have no issues there but the real issue is now you realise how fragile your grip on life can be & as a father you feel you must protect your family no matter what & I'll be honest here I am a new dad ya know I'm still learning how to do this, but you feel kinda helpless, logic says that this is only a heavy cold for most people kids included but no matter how small the risk of death it is still a risk that as new dad I have to deal with. Now I thought I was  realist but obviously I'm not, its amazing how cathartic it is talking to a bunch of strangers about my family who they will never know.

like i said earlier some parents are still sending there kids to school with obvious signs of flu, I mean seriously even if it was regular winter flu you don't send your kids to school but they persist, now to me that is plain bad parenting.

Also a question here to you guys. Should Mexico be held responsible for this outbreak & have to pay damages to the families who have lost people to the H1N1 virus seeing as they did the sum total of fuck all to contain it?. Or should they help towards the cost of anti virals?

As I've said in other swine flu threads -

I had it, got over it in three days (it fades faster than the normal flu, just spreads quicker) and was fine right after that. They should be deploying a vaccine for it soon. Which sucks, because then it means you'll have to get both flu shots...but hey, better safe than sorry.

I wouldn't freak your son out or anything. He'll get over it fairly soon and you'll forget it ever even happened. Just keep him calm and make sure he gets plenty of fluids and rest.

Yes you should because what the feed companies was doing was wrong & DEFRA let them do it. but you can only blame them for what happened to british feed. Other countries I believe had the same practices of grinding up animal carcasses & putting them in the feeds as well.
