I guess this has probably already been done before. Any how, the results are user generated and you can vote on bands (in a randomly selected order) by clicking those stars next to the band name.

I agree with quite a lot of the current top 20, but not all of them.

The Killers should probably be up there near the top, I think.

I agree with a lot of those. The bands haven't really done much to change or progress music as an art form, they've just made some catchy tunes and got insanely popular for no reason.

None of the others really... maybe a little bit of eminem and rarely rarely coldplay.

I'd put Kanye West and Pendulum at the top. There's so much better rap and dnb out there that rarely get noticed.

I haven't heard about two thirds of those.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Really? They're quite hard to avoid if you go to any public places (in the UK, at least), hear the radio, or watch/read any entertainment news.

I'm not sure they're one of the most overrated bands, though they're definitely getting there, which sucks. Been listening to them ever since their first album (courtesy of my parents lolwut) and they're very good, constantly changing and doing different stuff. But it almost seems like they're getting too popular for their own good.

I know this sounds pretentious and elitist, but it seems like the more popular a band becomes, the shittier they get. Once bands finally hit success, there are few that will still maintain their artistic integrity and do what they wanna do as opposed to pleasing the masses. Fortunately, once artists hit their peak and make enough money to live off of for the rest of their lives, they can do whatever the fuck they want without having to worry about sales. It's a fine line.

Fair enough. I guess they're just not really to my taste. Though I can't say I've actually listened to all their stuff to find out if they went through a phase that is more to my taste.

Radiohead isn't for everyone. If I were to recommend one album for you to listen to, I'd say "OK Computer". It was probably one of their more 'out there' albums, ranging from progressive rock to slow melancholy ambiance.

I don't really see U2 as overrated. New listeners to the band will only hear the newer albums, which are pretty dire. But they used to produce some fantastic music. Same applies to Greenday tbf.

And lol at freezer, we know you like to take pride in not having a social life, we get it.

Haha, NME with music elitism and/or credibility

NME's entire ethos is based around celebrating the hyped up 'in' bands of the now - they're the biggest bunch of scene hipsters around.

Having said that, the Top 10 list is perplexing. Half of them don't even belong in the normal journalistic domain of NME (Lady Gaga? Madonna? Since when did NME ever write about or care for the mainstream pop-industry?) and the other half are all bands that NME, or some other alternative music publication, such as Kerrang! have all madly hyped and celebrated during their emergence and peak. Most of the people that voted in the shitty poll are probably the same; people that were going nuts for Fall Out Boy's debut album, dyeing their hair and wearing skinny jeans, only now a few years later denouncing it as the uncoolest thing to ever hit the airwaves... oh by the way, have you heard this new Hadouken! stuff? I hear it's pretty fresh.
