I do not know a lot about computers. I guess you can say I have a basic understanding. You know, work, email, video games, etc. My question is what does disk defragmenter actually do?

Files over time on your hard drive get scattered around, increasing load times. Disk De-fragmenting reorganizes the files, so your load times are decreased.

Defragmentation programs don't actually change anything except the physical location of files on your HDD. Performance is the only thing you'll notice a difference on; nothing else will be affected from a user's perspective.Red Forman wrote:

What happens is that when a HDD physically writes data to the disk it may have part A of a file on one area of a disk and part B in another area. So when you request that file your HDD has to take extra time going to the two different disk areas to get all that data...imagine if a file has several fragments! Or, say BF2 is trying to load heavily fragmented shader or map files and your computer has to go grab them quickly from far apart areas of the disk. In reality we're talking fractions of a second in time but that can add up, especially for multiple files or one large file.
So, a defragmentation program reorganizes where data on your drive is physically located so that data for files is always all together in one location. Therefore, the seek times for that data reduce and performance increases.
The program that came with Windows is actually pretty good; from what I understand it was originally licensed by the Diskeeper corporation, the people who make software specially created for defragmentation. Of course if you want extra performance and options out of the software you can buy Diskeeper software, which I do
