It was more that they tried to do more than their fair share with out telling Germany, and then when they couldn't the asked the Germans for help.  The result was that Germany diverted troops from preparations for the invasion of Russia to bail out Italy, ultimately causing the invasion of Russia to be delayed and the Germans to be stuck in the middle of no where for the Russian winter.  Also there was that changing sides in the middle of the war thing too.
Surely invading Russia at all was a disastrous decision...even if the operation had been more successful, it would have just dragged the war out. Then again, if Germany had more time, and less strain on their resources, their technological innovations (turbojet aircraft, improved tanks, nuclear tech) could have given them the ability to discourage the Americans from joining the fight in Europe, and forced a different Cold War scenario?

This is from my own knowledge, rather than extensive research, but Hitler's over-ambition and poor strategic decisions lost them the war, methinks.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Cross

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross_patt%C3%A9e

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maltese_cross

"The Maltese cross or Amalfi cross is identified as the symbol of an order of Christian warriors known as the Knights Hospitaller or Knights of Malta."

"This cross is often associated with Crusaders or the Crusades. The heraldic cross pattée was sometimes used by a Crusader order, the Teutonic Knights (though their more usual emblem was a plain straight black cross on white),[citation needed] and later became associated with Prussia and the 1871-1918 German empire. It continued to be used by the German military after 1918. A version of the Iron Cross is used to date by the German army (Bundeswehr) as its symbol and nationality marking and found on vehicles, aircraft and publications.

The cross pattée is also sometimes associated with another Crusader order, the Knights Templar, though as with the Teutonic Knights, it was not used consistently. The Templars did adopt a red cross on their white robes in 1147,[1] but there was no specific style designated, and different Templars used different versions of cross. The pattée was by no means their official symbol. However, some modern Freemason organizations do use the pattée in an official way, and this use occasionally causes confusion as to which version was used by the medieval order of Knights Templar."

That doesn't change the fact that it wasn't a Christian symbol. It was/is a military decoration with no immediate ties to Christianity. To say that the Iron Cross that was used on Nazi uniforms was an explicit Christian symbol is just wrong.

Jesus, Joseph and doggy style Mary, can you read?!

It was a Cristian symbol and it was used way before Hitler even appeared.

Templar's, the Crusades, which religion were they fighting for? Christianity.

Yes, no shit. That doesn't mean it was used as a Christian symbol when the Nazi's were using it or when it was being used in modern times. Come on. It lost its Christian relevance centuries ago.

lol man, just lol

It might not be intended, BUT IT STILL IS. The fact that Hitler was a stupid fuck doesn't change the meaning of that cross.

It wasn't a Christian symbol, it was a Military decoration. It may have once been a Christian symbol and originated from Christianity, but eventually it evolved into a Military decoration with no ties to Christianity. I'm talking specifically about Germany and its use of the symbol, not the shape in general. So again, it wasn't a Christian symbol when the Nazi's were using it. It isn't a Christian symbol when the current Bundeswehr are using it either. It's a military one.

Like I said before, the last time it was used for specific Christian importance was probably hundreds of years ago. Things change. Symbols change. Meanings change. Traditions and cultures change. And I can assure you that during Nazi times and in todays world the Iron Cross is most definitely not a symbol for Christianity in Germany, it's a military one. It was awarded for bravery in combat. Not for devotion to Christianity and fighting for Christianity.

So when you say he fails because the Crosses are Christian symbols, you're wrong.

The iron cross is a military decoration that is based off a christian symbol, specifically the cross worn by the Teutonic Knights during the 14th century. source  (I know the original source is wikipedia, but the article itself contains too many sources to just do each individually)

Considering the award was originally designed and distributed in the 1800s, while Germany was considered a Holy Roman Empire, there are strong links to Christianity in the original intent and design.  This is not to say, however, that when Hitler and Nazi Germany distributed the medals that he had any intent to link the award to Christianity.  Rather, by the time the Nazis were in power, it was a traditional German medal that most likely could not have been easily replaced with another award that could have the same honor as the Iron Cross.
