About once every month, I preform defrags on my girlfriend's laptop using the Windows Vista defrag program.  Over the last two days the defrag takes so long that I shut down the PC.  I'm talking over 4 hours.  Vista's defrag doesn't seem to have a GUI like XP, so I don't know how far along the program is, or if it is stalling at a specific point.

Anyone know any fix to the problem?  Advise, please.

Use a different defrag like Defraggler or something.  There are tons of them out there

This was my first thought.  However, my GF would prefer being able to use Vista program.  I was hoping someone might know a fix for the problem.

No program known to earth could defrag the amount of porn I consume.  I just buy a new laptop every month and throw the old, crusty one out.

I thought about leaving it on all night, but can a defrag really take more than 4 or 5 hours?  If the answer is yes, then I will go for it.

My computer took 6.5 hours to defrag after 2.5 years of not defragging.

If its simplicity that she wants, pretty much any program has one click defrag.

I don't think any other program can have such a radically different defragging algorithm to make any significant difference.

Two suggestions, 1) defrag more often. 2) if you use another defragger, use one that works on boot rather than attempting to defrag while the system is running.

I've used the program without incident for about 6 months now.  I defrag regularly, at least monthly.  Thanks for the tips guys.

The application Liq posted is good. Just run the EXE and it does it all for you.
