Can't seem to get my 5.1 to work with WMP11.
The speakers are all plugged in correctly and work on everything else bar Windows Media Player, I think it's something to do with the codecs but i can't seem to find them anywhere, I guess this must be a common problem as quite a few people have Vista and speakers... Couldn't find anything when I searched though.

Any ideas?
I'd type my pc specs out all fancy again but teh mods would remove it. Again.

Is it not playing at all?

Or is it just playing through the side speakers?

Just playing through the two front speakers... I know this is what it's meant to do really, but i've just come from xp and miss my music coming from all around me =P

What i'm really after is a software fix that means I dont have to buy a fancy new soundcard

Does the soundcard you have now have a speaker testing utility? In the audio properties make sure 5.1 speakers are set.

Well, the onboard audio driver software you use, mine is RealTek, should have a setting to do this.

My setting is called "Speaker Fill".

If your music is stereo it won't be played through all 5 speakers by default. You can fix this by enabling 'speaker fill' under enhancements for your sound device's properties in the control panel (those names might be off)

my friend built a good rig a year and a half ago with vista as the OS . i saw it was slower and shit loads of errors.. i have had it with windows.. ill use a MS product, namely the xbox 360 for now. I rather put windows XP on my PC than that shit of a OS vista.

WTF is that topic name? The problem clearly is WMP11 like you said yourself, not OS. That will just attract flamewar from half the interwebs!

As said you will need to use the "Speaker fill" function. However, with crappy onboard sound and i'm assuming a pretty average 5.1 set, the sound quality will not be great.

Also, I use vista x64 and I love it. Its not good on low-end systems, but anyone that installs vista on a low-end system is a douche anyway.

assuming people who have lots of money that have a large business can afford a high end computer so they can run Microsoft VIsta. i know someone who runs a good business, vista chugs ass in his computer with quickbooks in it.

Specs and proof of errors, or else you just sound like another XP/OSX preacher who have their head so far up their ass they can see the color of their turd.

Sounds like your friend has hardware problems or has done something else wrong. Because I have used Vista for over 10 builds without slightest hint of issues.

And everyone who can't afford to get a decent pc shouldn't upgrade their OS anyway. Go use that fking WIN98, its faster than XP tbh. And how many ppl here actually are CORPORATE? We are talking about personal use PCs here.

@ the idea that OSX could in any way be a better corporate OS than Vista.

I've supported a LOT of Vista machines. I've done numerous builds using Vista. I've had one OS related issue - which was not being able to get Creative soundcards to work shortly after launch (this problem was resolved fairly swiftly with). That's been it. Everything else has been a result of hardware failure. I think that is extremely impressive and is certainly not something you see with OSX.

Anyway, back on topic...

Make sure you have the right drivers installed.

When I installed Vista this time through, it got some drivers for my audio, but not the ones that aloud me to customize the settings using RealTek.

Here's the site I got my software from.

Download, install, reboot and double click your RealTek Orange speaker Icon and check the box in the first window:

Should be good if you do that.
