Flashing underscore and no windows boot!

My pc harddrive was on its last legs so i bought a replacement and fresh installed windows vista onto it. However now whenever I reboot my pc it stays on a flashing underscore just before the windows loading screens. I clear my cmos settings and for the first time after clearing it will boot to os fine. however the next time i reboot it stays on the flashing underscore again. I'm also getting BSOD when in windows which i'm finding strange as its a fresh install.

Any ideas as to whats causing this?

Did you try something called memtest? This will test your memory. I can't be bothered looking for a url at the moment.

check your tower for POST led lights too... if they aren't all green, it indicates a problem that you can find by checking your mobo manual.
