If you want a family plan so you can call home for free, just get Verizon. They have really cheap plans. Plus, when you figure in that VZW is the largest nationwide network and there are free calls to other people with VZW - you can't really go wrong. I mean, you'll probably end up never going over your monthly limits on minutes or rarely have to pay for minutes to another carrier (if you get such a plan).

Again, VZW has shit selection for phones outside of the WinMo and BlackBerry range, but if you are going to get a smartphone, anyway, you'll be better off having such a large network.

What is this madness.

Surely some regulatory body in the USA should step in to stop what amounts to collusion between Apple and AT&T. If you buy an iPhone from an Apple retail store in the US, does it come already locked to the AT&T network?

Cause here, ones from Apple are unlocked. Mine is part of a 2 year contract with one of the major telecommunications companies (all of which offer the iPhone), so that is locked until the end of the contract. If I want to opt out, for some reason, they can unlock it for me...

As for me, I'm on whats termed as a $49 cap (btw, remember that all my $ are listed as Aussie dollars. currently, 1AUD = 0.81USD). That means I have to pay $49 a month, which gives me:
- $330 credit to anyone
- an additional $350 to anyone on my network
- 250MB of data for my iPhone

On top of that, I pay $19 a month for the iPhone (I keep it at the end, so I have essentially bought it at a discounted price), and $14 in insurance for it. I'm covered for ANYTHING happening to the phone, as replacing it outright would cost about $1000.

That's $82 per month. Which while it seems like a lot, I was probably paying the same amount in "pre-paid" credit per month before I got the iPhone.

I guess that seems like a lot , what what kind of call rates do you guys have? For me, SMS'es are 25c each, and calling is 35c flagfall + 80c/min. That kind of thing is pretty standard across the major carriers here.

Mk, my quest really hasn't gone far, probably because I've been worried so much about my computing situation.

I am liking the idea of cheap family plans, so Verizon is looking appealing (I've decided I could care less about the selection of phones). Are there any plans which you think are especially good deals for their price?

T-mobile has a pay-as-you-go...its $20 for the phone and $100 to start (total $120).

I bought it in October 2008 and didn't have to refill my minutes til April 2009 (7 months @ 100/7 = $14/month).

Of course if you're going to college all your well-to-do friends will have iPhones and they will be texting you at $0.15/text message and calling you at $0.10 per minute...

My phone cost me $50 a month! ahh! its $10 for my line(family plan) then $40 for unlimited data + text(soon to change cause i dont have 1st gen iphone anymore), which sucks cause its going to be $60 a month since its $50 a month with the 3GS
I'm so glad I have unlimited texting, I racked up 3500 texts in 1 week, this is what happens when your girlfriend and you text from 9am till 10pm with no breaks in between

$70-80/month is available, but so are much lower rate plans, as well as pay-as-you-go.

I just did a quick search and found many different plans (both PAYG and contract) that ran $30-40/month...around/slightly less than the rate Bert is quoting.

Additionally, if you don't pay the fees for a landline at your college dorm/apartment, you're even better off.

I returned to this thread to note how scarily correct the statement that everyone else would have a Blackberry or iPhone was. I ended up going with a horrible prepaid phone, and it has been called vintage by multiple people (in jest, but still.) If I had to estimate, and conservatively, I'd put the smartphone propagation at 80%.
