I want to do a serious upgrade soon.
To save a bit of cash I was trying to use my old case and power supply. The case can definitely fit the new parts. I am not sure about the power supply though. It is a 600W unit.

The new bits I want it to power are:
Intel i7 920
Gigabyte mobo
4 Gb DDR3 ram
MSI GTX 285
500 Gb hard drive
DVDRW drive
etc.

The computer shop said I should upgrade the power supply to a 750 W unit, but they are trying to make money , so do any guys in the know think 600W is too small for this system.

PS. any other suggestions for a new system would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I did the same thing recently and re-use my case and power supply...
I have a 650 watt psu and i think your 600 watt will be ok if you are only using 1 video card(but having extra power doesn't hurt if you have the extra money)... What brand of Power supply do you have now?
The 920 is a monster and 4gb of ram sounds good...(you going to use Windows 7 or ?)
The Gigabyte UD4P is great... I have the Gigabyte UD3P 775 socket for my Q9400 and it's been great so far
and you can overclock the UD4P with the push of a button in a little gigabyte program in windows...
or you can adjust things until the cows come home in the bios...lol

and depending on your case size and if you are going to overclock you might want to get an aftermarket cooler for the 920

Thanks very much Catbox. Unfortunately I cant Karma you twice in 1 day.
Unfortunately I dont know the brand of the power supply. I have just had a look around with a torch, and still cant find a name ( which doesnt bode well ). I may have to stop being such a tight ass and just get a new one.
I am going to get the Windows Vista that can be upgraded to windows 7.
I am not really into over clocking, so probably wont need more cooling. I think the graphics card will be the big power user. But it should also make all the difference to gaming.

Will definitely check out the UD4P. I have always had good results from gigabyte, so would be happy to stay with them.

Thats big help. Thanks again.

The Power supply i feel is the most important thing in a reliable computer... All kinds of weird errors can be caused by a psu that can't deliver the power well...
I got a 650 watt like i said and it is more than enough to run my comp...it's an antec 650 watt with 3 12 volt rails...
I have a slightly older version of this
It has the modular connectors.... which is kind of cool if you want to eliminate excess wires...

here's a 650 watt antec that is not a modular connector model but it's 78 bucks... Not sure how much it is in AU?

I like antec and have good luck with them...
there are other very good brands also...
Corsair makes good stuff

I would like to hear whats wrong with them. They sound pretty good in some magazines. But if they are dodgy, I would like to hear your experiences before I go and buy a dud.

i7 920 D0
Scythe Mugen 2
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5
3x2GB DDR 1600MHz from Corsair, OCZ, A-DATA, Mushkin or G.SKILL.
GTX 275
Enermax Pro82+ 625w
DVD-RW Drive SATA
WD Caviar Black 500GB / Samsung F1 500GB

tbh I and too many others have had terrible experience with MSI's self-designed products and I cannot recommend those. Please play it safe and get reference design card.

You 3 sticks of ram for i7, hence 6GB.

Oh and GTX 285 is pretty overpriced. GTX 275 is not far away in terms of performance.

e: and if you are not planning on going SLi ever, I would get Modu82+ 525w isntead of the higher wattage Pro82+, Modu obviously has modular cables. Which is nice.

OK I have just done a bit of research and think that the GTX 275 should be adequate for my machine. What brands are good? I kinda like XFX,  but gigabyte, ASUS ,Leadtek, POV and ZOTAC also feature at the place I usually shop.
Any thoughts on those.

XFX, ASUS, Gigabyte, all good. Zotac is pretty nice too. Out of those I probably would get Asus or XFX. Really comes down to what you get bundled with the card and your personal preference is.
