What I call "VGA" is a D-sub and "DVI" is a, well, DVI
The one with HDMI is obviously made for something else too...

Are you saying you do not notice the difference between DVI and D-SUB connection? Sorry, that is impossible, is your monitor void or something?

Plus CRT monitors have generally better image than LCD monitors.

Must have been a shit CRT you have been using. Any decent CRT monitor has a better image than a TN panel LCD monitor.
CRTs are smudgy to look at, and make your eyes hurt after long hours of use, just as a TV does...

LCD / TFT have a crisp, perfect and non-flashing image...

that may be, but fact remains that the dev.'s made a mistake if it is so, since the Atom has no chance of functioning properly as a Media Centre on any monitor justifyably worthy of a HDMI

imo it is just there to allow HP/Compaq to market it as "HD-ready" making dumb consumers buy something that is useless because they think they are getting the latest tech...

And while I am at it, I will NEVER own another HP/Compaq product again if I have anything to say.. more faulty and flawed hardware you have to search long and hard for..

Of course bad CRT's look smudgy and only support low refresh rates (which do make eyes hurt) but any decent CRT that is big enough for the resolution that it is used with and does 85+ Hz is not bad for the eyes, nor smudgy. And the colours are just superior to TN panels. Quite probably you just haven't had the possibility to use a decent CRT monitor.

the GMA chipset on the netbooks running atom cores is just not powerfull enough to run high quality video on displays much bigger than the 1024x600 ones on the netbooks

hi def prolly is sloppy but watching divx on a bigger monitor surely is more enjoyable. But we've already came to a conclusion that HDMi is obsolete as you do not notice any difference between digital and analog.

The image quality going from a DVI-out on a gfx card through an analog-Dsub adapter to the monitor results in a perfect, crystal clear image... so I really can't see any reason for further improvement before 1920x1600 or higher becomes main-stream for gaming....

you guys must have some serious EMR problems to make it fuck with your analog cables
