I agree... the power supply is arguably the most important thing in a computer...
Look for a psu with 3 12 volt rails and make sure it has enough video card connectors... some cards take 2 6 pin
I have the antec 650 watt that i got on sale at microcenter in fairfax for 90 bucks and it has more than enough power...
and the gigabyte ep45 UD3P uses an EPS/12V 8-pin Motherboard Connector ... some boards only need a 4 pin connector
but with your quad core.. 8 pin is the way to go...

Ahh... just found this... This is a newer version of what i have...  antec 650 watt 90 bucks
(says they have 2 in stock...i would call because their inventory system is not good... The prices and the in store service are though)
3 +12 volt rails... EPS/12V 8-pin Motherboard Connector(for 8 pin motherboards)and 2 6 pin connectors for video cards...
and it has modular cables...

tbh, number of rails means absolutely nothing. Best would be one huge rail for everything. That 650w Antec is total overkill in wattage for him, and sacrifices part of quality in order to get it.

My dad doesn't want to drive me to Rockville till like Saturday because it's a 45-minute drive.  I guess he somehow forgot that so is every other drive when you live in Maryland, lol

I might just order every other part except the processor on Newegg.  That way if all the other stuff gets here earlier, I can still use the Cedar Mill 651 I bought that didn't work in this computer until I get the Q9550

I guess it just seems a bit ridiculous to be spending so much money a part that doesn't directly affect performance and should just work.  But you're probably right.  I've heard horror stories of houses burning down(no-name PSUs of course) and read reviews on Newegg of one that sent shrapnel throughout the case after it died.

lol, jsnipy is a completely different person

And I got an 8600GT for now but expandability would be great if I got one that needed a 6-pin connector.  Maybe a PSU with decent power and two 6-pins would be good since the mobo supports Crossfire.

TBH, you can forget about CF right away. That starts to sound good idea after budget $400-500 for GPUs. 2 pci-e connectors are nice because many grahics cards need 2 these days, and then you don't need to use adapters for it.

Turns out I may be able to spend a little more on a PSU.

I need one with at least one PCI-e connector, at least one molex connector, and an 8-pin CPU connector.

Active PFC and 80+ Bronze are preferred.  80+ is a minimal requirement

Try to keep below 100$ but I can go a little over if necessary

That's not true. It's risky and traditionally has a higher chance of going wrong using a single high current rail. That's why there was legislation in place to limit total power over a single rail within the EU for quite some time. Newer, more robust components have made this slightly outdated, but it's still typically more reliable and often more efficient to use more than one rail. The more power you put on a single rail, the greater the chances of it fucking up.

Whether it has 3 rails or not is completely inconsequential, but it is often good to split the load a bit. In general I agree that the number of rails means very little - but I disagree that one huge rail for everything would be best.

I do agree that at 1kw range multiple rails helps. Hence Enermax I have has 6 30A rails. In 500w or less PSUs mroe rails often just means mor trouble. Zalman PSUs are known to shutdown under load because one rail gets overloaded.

You don't have to overclock the processor to run the memory above 667.  Intel processors love the bandwidth so you want to run the memory as fast as you can.   In the past (a few years ago now) It was better to run 1:1 but now go for all the speed you can.

Even with looser timing you will get more out of higher speed RAM.  May not be a huge difference in most apps but it is there and it doesn't cost much if any more to get ddr2 800-1066.

Well I just ordered everything this morning.  Unfortunately I fall just a few bucks short($15 or so) of being able to afford the processor so I'm just gonna wait till my next paycheck to get that.  I don't have any compatible heatsinks to use on the motherboard either so I can't even use the Cedar Mill 661 I bought for this comp(it was incompatible) in the mean time.

why are you getting floppy drive? just get an USB stick. I haven't had floppy drive in my pc for years.

And just please get the 800mhz or 1066mhz ram. its not like its going to cost more than couple bucks more.

Latencies mean fuck all. You may see benefits from lower latencies on newer i7 based systems, like you used to see on older AMD systems due to the memory controller being on the CPU, but not with any of the hardware you are getting. That system will benefit far more from higher frequencies than low latencies and it doesn't cost any more.

If you actually bought PC5300 RAM you're an idiot.

Well he was warned.  And the timing he got aren't any better than you can get in pc 6400, I just bought a set of gskill pc6400's with 4-4-4-12 for a buddy for a few $$'s more than that 5300.

The parts all look good... The Gigabyte ep45 UD3P is a really great board... you will like it...
I would get the 800mhz ram if you can exchange it... or just by some 800 or 1066 later on when you save up...
  Microcenter has 4gb of corsair 800mhz for 35.00 after rebate... that's what i have and they work great...
I may get 4gb of 1066 soon to see if that helps with rendering... but the 800mhz is fast...

and if you look on craigslist in dc/md/va every once in awhile someone will be selling a new or pretty new 4850/4870 or 9800gtx etc... for pretty good deals...
