Actually, sound quality is one of the strongest arguments for getting a Cowon. They're unmatched in the field.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

OK, after weighing the various players ... I think I am going to stick with the Apple iPod Classic. For the same money a lot of these other players are going for, I get 120GB versus approx. 30GB. I wouldn't have a problem switching from iTunes, but the storage space is the big seller for me. Plus, I get to continue using my Belkin battery pack, which is great for long trips. Not knocking the other players, but the storage space is a big plus for me. Plus, Apple's warranty is honored worldwide, which is even better because I am buying it here in the USA and taking it back to Austria.

You could get a 16GB Cowon D2+ for $150 and buy some SD cards, which are getting cheaper and cheaper. It also has a much longer battery life than the Ipod.

Cowons and Ipods both have their own problems.  Ipod, it's mostly sound quality and narrow format range.  Cowon, it's the damned awful GUI.  I'm not sure it's worth buying one if he doesn't really care that much about the sound.
