So, I'm off to uni, and I'd want some more performanc out of my aging machine (2006).

1. specs

M2n32-sli deluxe mobo
2 gb OCZ Platinum RAM @ 800 mhz
AMD 64 x2 5200+ cpu running at 2.81 atm (summer is bad in the basement, ambient temp is around 28 degrees)
BFG 9800 GT OC
450w PSU that came with my Raidmax Sagitta case. I really need to change this. It doesn't have enough 4-pin connectors to run my case lights, even, and no 6-pin PCI connector.
W7 x86 (don't think my mobo can run x64)

2. given a budget of $150, what should I do?

a) get a second 9800 GT, run in SLI, and change the PSU
b) get a new gfx card entirely
c) wait for dx11, and hopefully more money (GTX 300 series?)
d) wait some more, get a new comp entirely
I like pie.

Isnt that processor dependant?

And I'd say save up, SLI wouldnt be worth it.

Or use it on booze

The  processor can run x64, but something else on the comp can't. Every time I've tried installing, it goes tits up.

Bam, booze it is.

ram and psu. when you can afford more complete build, there is dx11 shitz out

e: maybe not ram because you are likely to need DDR3 if you wait more. Just get good PSU that you can use in the new build too.

Actually what he said.  ^

It's a proactive upgrade rather than just a little boost, it will make sense on the long run.

Okay, any recommendations? Cheaper means more money for booze/later upgrades

Okay, so I got a Coolmax CU-700B PSU for 75 bucks, good deal.
Now, for the RAM: I can get OCZ Reper PC850 DDR2 for 60 bucks for 2gb. Is this worth it?

Yeah, but might as well get the good stuff. I'm willing to spend another 100 bucks.

I'm a fan of OCZ, Corsair's fine too.

Any recomms?

Thanks much.

But, is that futureproof? I'd rather spend more now than have to upgrade again in 2 years. Keep in mind this will probably be kept for at least 4.

DDR2 is not futureproof at all. (such thing doesn't reall exist either)

That ram is as good as any other kit of DDR2, but like I said before, you'll be facing with yet another ram upgrade very likely if you upgrade your pc.

So I recommend saving your money for now and get some DDR3 later with new build.

Does DDR3 RAM work with Core 2 CPU's?

Edit: didn't want to make a new thread...

Yeah it does, but supposedly it's not a big difference in performance.

Would it be worth it to get it with a C2Q proc if I was going to upgrade to i7 or whatever at some point in the next year or two???

Or would it be better to get 8GB of DDR2 for C2Q system, then get DDR3 with the new system later when replacing the C2Q??? (I would probably be completely building a new system if I went i7 or whatever, and the rest of the family would use the C2Q for everyday use)

The i7 gets better performance out of DDR3 from what I've read, and RAM is so cheap right now that I'd just go for DDR3.

But would it be worth it to go DDR3 with a Core 2 Quad if I'm just going to have to buy more for the next system after it anyway, since the older one will still be used and need the RAM? (ie: now parts carrying over from Core 2 System)

just get some ultra cheap 2gb kit of ram and save up for i5/i7 build
