Strong Meteor Shower
In North America, the best time to watch will be between midnight to 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12. (North East)

It’s that time of the year to see something amazing in the sky. The peak of the Perseid meteor shower is Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. OMSI’s Jim Todd says you may see as many as 60 meteors per hour. They look like fast moving flashing points of light moving across the sky. The best time to watch is right after midnight. They’re caused by debris from a comet re-entering the earth's atmosphere.

The annual Perseid meteor shower is expected to put on a good show this week for those willing to get up in the wee hours of the morning and wait patiently for the shooting stars.

In North America, the best time to watch will be between midnight to 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, but late Tuesday night and also Wednesday night could prove fruitful, weather permitting.

The Perseids are always reliable, and sometimes rather spectacular. The only things that puts a damper on the August show are bad weather or bright moonlight. Unfortunately this week, as the Perseids reach their peak Tuesday and Wednesday nights, the moon will be high in the sky, outshining the fainter meteors.

Still, skywatchers around the globe will have a good chance of spotting the brighter meteors. Some already are enjoying the show.

Perseid meteors emanate from the constellation Perseus, which rises above the horizon in late evening
this time of year (shown on this map) and is high overhead during the predawn hours. The meteors
can began anywhere in the sky, but a line along their path will trace back to Perseus.

Damn I'm going a to be getting a storm coming through. Lovely.  I would be in a perfect viewing spot if it wasn't for this stupid hail storm.
Edit: The moon is also gonna make things tricky for those of you with clear skys

What I don't fucking understand is how they find those lines and name them in space. There are hundreds of stars you can see so you can link any one of them and it's the same thing. How gay...or am I missing something?

At 5PM my dad asked me what time does it start? I said well it's already peaking right now (pointed to the bright summer sky), you just can't see it.

I should check on these things more often, there were only few clouds in the sky around midnight...

just thousands of years worth of tradition.
the ancients noticed the stars had a particular pattern, and named the patterns so they could pass down their relative position in the sky.
(this all happened before digital clocks.)
by passing down that info, they could train their kids when to plant, and when to harvest. so, it was all about telling time, in calender years.

. . . before calenders.

This is not a single night event. Tonight is the peak though.

"One group of UK stargazers will be leading the first ever global 'Twitter Meteorwatch' overnight, as they observe a shooting star display.

The Perseid meteor shower lights up the night sky every summer, as the Earth's orbit takes it through debris scattered by the tail of Comet Swift-Tuttle.

Every year, astronomers rig up telescopes to enjoy the display, which can see up to 80 meteors streaking overhead every hour.

But this year, Newbury Astronomical Society will be holding a "meteor star party" on Twitter, involving thousands of worldwide guests, "tweeting" live pictures of the Perseids and other celestial objects.

It comes after a similar "Twitter Moonwach" organised in May.

Richard Fleet, the society's President, said of the event: "We realised early on that what people want are images of the night sky, so we used our array of telescopes and cameras to provide a constant stream of pictures which we uploaded straight to Twitter...we had thousands of people who had probably never looked through a telescope before asking us questions directly and viewing images."

The best time to see the Perseids will be after 10.30pm on Tuesday evening, in the early hours of Wednesday morning, and on Wednesday night.

The mass participation event is planned as part of the International Year of Astronomy.

The National Trust says top sites to watch the show in Britain include Stonehenge in Wiltshire, Black Down in Sussex and Friar's Crag in the Lake District."

Now that would be a cool place to watch it.

Cool idea: http://twitter.com/NewburyAS/
