You aren't raining on anyone's parade (at all). I don't think that anyone is saying completely free of oil. The energy requirments for 40+ miles are in plain sight. Weight and space are also known and posted in the specs, so is the mpg/range. The target consumer is not a Taxi or otherwise commercial vehicle. Family commute cars generally put mileage on quicker than other household vehicles. They are used consistently and often. This vehicle is designed to take the place of the "errand car".

You need to understand that this is a significant move towards reducing oil consumption. I'm always skeptical until these thing are tested en masse. This however is a learning phase, albeit overdue. Even if it is the wrong specific direction, the intent is good and it's certainly better than peddling the status quo.

Actually not really useless for taxis, since it gets better mileage then most cars operating off gas. You don't really lose any more luggage or interior space then a RWD car, since they put the battery pack and motor in what would normally be the transmission tunnel. It also weighs ~3500lbs
That's really not THAT heavy for a modern 4 door car, and lighter then most hybrids.

Also its not a sport model, so what are the real draw backs to weight? Efficiency? Its already doing better there then most.

This is true. There are Prius taxis, theres no reason why this wouldnt work too. The cool thing about the car is that you could swap out the petrol motor for ethanol, LPG, or any other type of motor that you have abundant supplies for. Its just generating power for the batteries remember. Its a good stop gap before battery technology allows us to get rid of the Internal combustion component.

This country has plenty of coal and at least it would start up the Coal industry again. Except this time around we have the benefit of all that clean coal technology. There's always nuclear energy and Wind power is something that this place is going to be using alot more, I think we're building the biggest Wind Farm in the world right now or something

A variety of energy sources... some (hopefully more) renewable and domestic. Thats less than $1 for a full charge/range compared to $50 for a full tank of gas. I'd rather donate $1 than $50 to the Donald Trumps of Dubai.

You may not have heard but there is currently a HUGE push for green energy to power our grid now in the States. If you have a couple weeks read the stimulus bill.

Yeah exactly, key word is domestic. Like I said, Energy security first and foremost. Green comes in a close second. Right now is a good opportunity to do both at the same time. And it's always a good thing when Russia does stupid shit like turn the Gas off and other dumb stuff and when OPEC decides to do an embargo or hike prices etc.. because all it does it spur on advances that will eventually leave them obsolete. We need a few more big big things to happen though before politicians really do start taking things seriously. But it will happen, just have to wait.

I remember some show that they were showcasing mass produced solar panels that are thinner then a sheet paper and as flexible as one

it was also see-thru - tinted but see-thru ........ imagine covering all windows, homes and commerical with that

This thing is a great car, I hope it does well. I can see it being shot down by all the critics though, they'd do well to launch it in Europe first TBH, prove their point then put it to the US market.

For it's purpose of city commutes I think it's pretty ideal, it's no all rounder I'll grant you.  I've had a car just over a year now and only done 3 journeys that are significantly over 40 miles, and the backup petrol engine would have coped with those just fine.

Biomass power plants use crops and other vegetative byproducts to produce power similar to the way coal-fired power plants work. Another product of Biomass is extracting ethanol from sugarmill byproducts.

We have one nuclear reactor but too many enviro weenies who know nothing about the technology voicing their stupid opinions in parliament so atm there is a ban on nuclear power.

Everybody likes to point this out like they uncovered some magic consperiousy...

The fact is that 1 KW of electricity out of the way is MUCH cleaner then 1kw of engergy burned in an cars engine, even when they are both burning the same fuel.
ESPECIALLY when you consider that a very significant amount of those engines are poorly maintained and fairly worn.
