Sweet, all is clear here in Iowa, does anybody know much about old school 35mm cameras? I got a Pentax Spotmatic from the 70's that I've used before for night shots (Storms, Northern Lights) but now I don't have a clue what settings I should put it at. The film is ASA 800 I believe. Shutter speed wont matter because I'll leave it open, right? I was told if I use film for night shots, but leave the shutter open to long, the pictures will turn out grainy. So I should use a differerent film type...?

I will leave the shutter open until I see meteors, then I'll snap it.  Ya, my terminology is probably off a bit...

i envy you. i got into digital, so the learning curve is painless.
so, from memory; iso 800 = lower light, good there. use a tripod. if you hand-hold + long exposure, you'll have problems. longer exposure, smaller aperture normally, if you have a tripod bigger aperture (smaller number) longer exposure (time) iso 800 will equal grain eventually.
have fun, post pics if you can . . .

Got the camera on a tripod, I have one of those things that screws into the shutter button that is on a string/line so I can push it down, hold it, and release at my leisure, without moving the camera. I got iso400 film, for longer exposure. The aperture is how much light I let in right? By adjusting the lens? I think I have it all the way open.

Narupug: The Moon? Shit, I can't see the moon so I guess that means I got more cloud cover then I thought

the thing is called a shutter release. nice. for low light, 800 is better than 400. (100 is for broad daylight). right about aperture - it's the 'eye' of the lense. think of the smaller number being 'the eye' open more wide. the more open, the more light you let in. adjusting your lense may be focus - it is on mine.

i think you've got it, have fun!

I know, i was just testing ur knowledge on the matter

So, the lower the number, the more light I let in?

Sadly, it might not matter cause of the clouds...

be ready, if you're up for it. the aperture # is lower > more light (it's backwards.)  it's inter-related [aperture - shutter time - iso] meaning

800 iso film (good)
middle aperture ( i'd say 5.6 -11, depending on)
shutter open (quick click, big {small number} aperture) long click, smaller aperture {bigger number - 11 is small}

it'll be worth it, if'n the weather cooperates. i got lightning out to the south. imma try anyways!

I've always loved the ligth shows on my birthday.
Tomorrow I'm off so tonight I'll be drinking cervesa(s) and watching the sky falling on us nicely.
The only thing I'm a bit close to the city only the large ones will show.

Saw 5 nice ones tonight already, sky is clear and the neigborhood is quiet, I've chosen my house nicely.

Awesome. I take it that you are aware of the possible Aurora viewings tonight and tomorow in the northern hemisphere?
