KDDI R&D Laboratories, research arm of KDDI (a Japanese telcom) and Japan’s National Institute of Information & Communications Technology (NICT) yesterday announced [JP, PDF] the development of the world’s most advanced fiber optic cable.

The companies claim their new cable is able to transmit data around 10 times faster than existing cables (30 terabits per second vs. around 3). In other words, 720 DVDs with two hours of video can be handled within a single second.

The researchers say they were able to transmit data to data points that were 240km away. KDDI aims at commercializing the technology by 2012. One field the cable could be used in is medicine, as it could allow physicians to give instructions on surgeries in distant places in a reliable way.

KDDI also said connecting all major Japanese cities with the new cable would cost around $210 million.
Holy Hell Japan.

Problem with fibre optics is that is can be difficult to install and really expensive over large areas. For Japan its great, so to Britain. The US is would probably be infeasible.

Fios went up rather quickly here.. but you're right, there is no comparison as far as Japans highly congested infrastructre vs somewhere like the States.

I think the real application here is cloud computing. Instead of running programs like photoshop on your machine they can be hosted and used on remote machines just as if it was local. This will probably piss off PC manufacturers/parts, who rely on upgrades for profit. They'll have to solicit the corporations hosting the software.

my opinion

Cloud computing is scary. Also 30 terabits is 3 times my current HD space.

$210 million isn't that much though. I'm sure for a country like the US it would obviously be a lot more expensive, but still possible.

Hell there is still a lot of people who can't even get broadband (aside from the satellite crap) so I wouldn't see this happening in the US anytime soon.

Only $210 million? Wow, and for a country like Japan, that's small change anyway. They already have ridiculously fast internets though, way better than here. The UK has the advantage like Japan of being able to do stuff like this, but I doubt we'll see even standard fibre optic for at least another 20 years, and that's only for London. As for the US, maybe in the really big cities only.

It's astonishing just how far back the West is compared to Japan and South Korea when it comes to internets. And then there's Australia lol

Canada has it's issues to.. I think it's also a case of a low geographical population density.

Wonder what we'll be capable of in 50 years when I'm 80.  My grandma saw us go from a model T to 250mph supercars, from basic airplanes to space, from telephones to satellite communications and this crazy fast fiber optic.  Amazing.

I was going to ask that.  These countries are small in comparison, so that makes it easier I reckon.

Also.. The US is the equivalent of early adopters in the tech/infrastructure industry. It's like rushing to have the first of something and then the slower to develop countries are lucky enough to get improved technology. The cell phone industry is like this as well.

Right.  That's a good point also.  Not sure many people understand that.

Its true, our internet is shitty and expensive.  But its not just population density, its the anti-competitive laws OUR OWN GOVERNMENT MAKES.  Bloody CRTC makes it impossible to have more ISPs and Wireless carriers so the 2 ISPs (2!!) we have in Canada just lock prices and rake in the money.

Verizon is about to go live with 4g (LTE)(mobile downloads @ up to 12 meg down).. I'm sure they'll demand to rape us for the service though.
