Right, so my computer is most likely in need of an upgrade. I'd like it to run a bit faster and I would like to know what kind of upgrade would help it the most.

Specs:

E6600 - 2.4GHz (the oldest version, not the better overclockable ones)
Gigabyte P35-DS4
4GB OCZ PC6400 Platinum RAM
500GB Samsung Spinpoint
500GB Western Digital
8800GTS 640MB BFG (oldest version)
520W Corsair Modular PSU

I'm thinking a CPU upgrade would make a hell of a difference, but I am unsure. What do you guys recommend I get? I don't want to get a completely new computer, just an upgrade that will do me well. Games is of no real necessity right now as there are no decent ones out.

Either an E8500 or an E8400, depending what you can afford.

So not a quad core then?

Perhaps a Q9550 for starters

Get a nice cooler for that CPU and OC it to around 3GHz. Then wait for the DX11 AMD cards like everyone else is doing, maybe the new games start popping out aswell by that time.

I cannot OC my CPU. It's the older version of the E6600, which means it's highly unstable at anything above its clock speed. I had it at 3GHz before, and my computer was never stable enough to run for hours. I am not willing to do it again.

I want my computer to go faster, a graphics card wont do that, will it?

Well I had E6300 at 3.5GHz. Are you sure you upped the right voltages?

Graphics card doesn't really affect the everyday use outside gaming. What is the absolutely max budget of yours btw?

Yes.

@ Panzer : It's a known problem with the old version of the E6600 being completely unstable when overclocking. I've tried every voltage and setting on the planet and none will work properly. I've been on every board about CPUs and all of them come up with the same unstable problems with the old E6600. The newer versions are fine, and the E6300 and shit are fine as well, but for some reason, the E6600 just shits on your face.

I see.

Well that Q9550 will last you for good while. I would recommend a good cooler to go with it tho, the stock one is pretty bad.

And when you start gaming again its time to have another look at the graphics market.

Is that the best option then?

Also, Panzer, would my Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro not be enough? Or should I just get a new one anyway?

He said the stock one would suck, I'm pretty sure your Freezer 7 is adequate enough. You're not going to be doing anything crazy anyway. No need to upgrade your GPU as it's still quite a good one, and it's not like PC Gaming is going anywhere at the moment.

That's my 2 Euro cents

heh I wouldn't get anything unless perhaps an SSD and a GFX card later when you really need it. With an SSD speed of your PC will be most noticeable, unless you work with stuff that put a really heavy load on the CPU. Also I would OC that CPU, 3.0GHz should be just fine, I've downclocked my CPU from 4Ghz to stock 3Ghz which is more than enough for me.

Edit: also consider a card with HDMI output

Read up. I cannot OC my CPU.

Then perhaps an E8xx dual core. Legendary CPUs worth every cent lol

but certainly not worth upgrade from E6xxx to another dual core.
Quad or save up for completely new build.

SSD's aren't worth the price and not really something to consider when you want to do a somewhat noticeable upgrade, besides the dude has 1TB of space already. He already explained his current CPU OC situation, and a new GFX card is utterly pointless, even if he was using it for gaming.

No point wasting money on a new card for fricken HDMI. They don't output sound, not to my knowledge anyway... and most shit worth its salt that comes with a HDMI comes with DVI.

Go for the new CPU that, that guy suggested. Use your Freezer 7 for it. Buy some of that new fangled paste if you haven't got some. Leave the rest it as it as and spend the rest of your money on booze and weed.

Quad or save up for completely new build.

normally not but since his CPU is non OCable then I don't see why not. Only get a quad if you really need one otherwise the cheaper dual core is a very good solution.

Ok, say for the sake of upgrading completely, as it's probably a waste of money doing otherwise.

This a good start?

I have a Corsair HX 520W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply, is that enough?

thumbs up, the F7P is fine on the Q9450 even with medium overclocking.  if you want to push it as far as it'll go then you need something better, but i doubt you want to do that because it'll be more expensive and time-consuming.

edit: upgrading fully is a waste

Yep, more than enough. And that is totally awsome upgrade.

but like said, Q9450 would be best bang for buck.
