I'm thinking about upgrading to this from my XFX 8600GT 512MB:

An 8600GT, like all almost all DX10 cards is able to eat DX9 games for breakfast but since this is a first-gen mid-level DX10 card, I have a feeling that it's right back to level ground on DirectX10 games, which would be quite a punch in the gut I'd imagine

And I plan to upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes out so that's why I'm wondering about this.

Also, will it be loud?

AMD DX11 cards are just behind the corner tbh. Skip the DX10.1.

Define just around the corner.  I haven't been reading about the DX11 cards very much at all.

windows 7 launch pretty much coincides with AMD DX11 cards.

, that's what I was hoping to hear

So will they be able to eat DX10 games for breakfast as DX10 cards did to DX9 games?

They'll be considerably faster in DX10 as well, can't talk about same dx9 scenario but performance difference is big. Crysis won't ever run well, mainly because it just doesn't scale at all.

Few months down the line..

Don't worry about the DX11 cards, ATI's pulling out a DX11.1 in a month.
