I've always used USB but I've always wondered whats the benefit on firewire
They use a different technology/architecture.
I think Firewire is faster than USB 2.0.

Its faster but less compatibility. Though when USB 3.0 comes along itll be faster

there are often issues when hot-swapping firewire devices; lost data or even hardware defects.SEREMAKER wrote:
so why still have USB ...... sounds like everything should switch to firewire
I understand the unviersal advantages of USB but if firewire transfers faster .... I would figure that this would be the requirment now
hmmmmmmm interesting.Sup wrote:

in another post I asked about a external hd and I think I've boiled it down to one ...... so with something important like a external hd, I should stick to a USB ?
Will it be plugged in for a long time or will you be taking it around with you all the time? If youre moving it around and plugging it in and out, USB for sure, lots of computers dont have firewire for one.SEREMAKER wrote:

I went with USB simply because its so popular-every PC has a USB port but not all have a FireWire port. I have 2 desktop PCs and a couple of laptops and would like to use my external drive on all of them.SEREMAKER wrote:

well mainly between a laptop and 2 desktops and they all have firewireWinston_Churchill wrote:

I've just never have used the firewire
I'd say USB, I have 3 external USB drives and theyre totally fine. Its only slow if youre transferring hundreds of GBs of movies like I doSEREMAKER wrote:

i thought it would be backward compatible only to the speed the device you are connecting to is capable of... for instance, hooking up a usb 3.0 hard drive to a usb 2.0-capable port is only going to get you 2.0 speeds. dont quote me though..Sup wrote:
I'm pretty sure it will be backwards compatible just like USB 2.0 is. The speeds of 3.0 are only theoretic now until it gets released and someone benches it. I wouldn't wait for USB 3.0 if I were you
lol of course, makes sense. A USB 2.0 device will not become a USB 3.0 device when connected to a PC with USB 3.0 portssteelie34 wrote:

Firewire is much quicker and less CPU hungry.
Firewire 800 FTW!
Firewire is one of Apple's best inventions (which is why I was so indignant when they removed it from the ill fated aluminium MacBooks, which are no longer produced (replaced by the old style MacBooks and a 13" MacBook Pro in the new style)). Firewire shits all over USB. The big advantage USB has is that it is cheap and therefore widely used, which means compatibility with a wider range of products.

So far everyone has been comparing 1st generation firewire with 2nd generation USB - not a fair comparison (and firewire is still faster and less resource hungry). Firewire runs at ~ 400mbps, firewire 800 at ~ 800mbps and the forthcoming S1600 and S3200 specs look faster than USB 3.0 and are due for release sooner.SEREMAKER wrote:
since you mentioned USB 3.0 being faster .... well it be backwards compatible and is it going to put firewire down

You won't find it anywhere . That's the thing with Apple, they always make really proprietary shit. USB does what it says on the tin without any fuss.
You'll probably start seeing USB 3.0 on most new motherboards and products by the end of 2010 or early 2011, although I think it's starting to be slowly rolled out now

LOL yeah, at my uni one of the departments has 10 firewire Camcorders. All but one can no longer transfer data from them because of people unplugging them without ejecting them, or something like that, so you need to use the only one that works to offload data to a computer..Sup wrote:

i remember the first time i saw firewire demo'd - it was @ Brainshare '98. at the apple booth this woman was streaming a movie from a G4 to a MacBook(?, it was a laptop with an apple log) and i thought "how'd they get a copy of Armageddon so fast" when it dawned on me what she was doing. streaming a movie . . . anyways win98 and usb sucked, but that was then and this is now: usb ftw
What are you talking about?Mekstizzle wrote:

There are countless hard drives and suchlike available using firewire 800. My PC has firewire 800 too, so did my previous one.
3rd gen firewire isn't even made by Apple, who stopped development work on firewire ages and ages ago.
It's not as widely available and it's not as cheap. But that doesn't make it rare or expensive, it just shows how dirt cheap and common USB is. I ALWAYS use firewire 800 for external drives. It's so much better.
