Because it's cheaper, and was much cheaper before (in terms of base value). Because it came out like 1 and a half years earlier. And because the PS3 had a poor games library when it was launched and for awhile after that, compared to the 360.
Also Microsoft have the financial prowess for massive marketing amongst other things.
It's not rocket science as to why the Xbox is more popular. It's a simple gaming console for people who just wanna shoot shit. It's like why the Wii is raping the other two consoles, because it appeals to a much wider audience. The same goes for the 360. It built itself on targeting the American audience with loads of FPS games and shit like that.
But the main thing is price, more specifically, the price you see on the website, or on the shop floor. It's cheaper than the PS3. And it was for a very long time, by some amount.
You might see the PS3 pick up sales now that the price has dropped, but even if it does get close to the X360 by the time that happens the 360 will have been 5-6 years old. Maybe more and they'll probably release the Xbox 720 or something.
