This look good? Or could it be better?

A 940 would add a whopping £200 to the end result, which is what I don't get. It's like £60 more expensive than the 950.... Why?!
940 is discontinued as therefore more expensive. still ridiculous waste tho. I would recommend aftermarket cooler for i7 too.

So, good setup then? Should I go for a different mobo/RAM? Something you would recommend more?

Ok, aftermarket cooler it is as well. Which one?

Yup that is pretty good setup, although I would personally get an ASUS P6T.

Mugen 2 is best bang for buck in i7 coolers atm.

What about the MSI X58 Platinum?

It came second on the Board Performance in Tomshardware. I know the best is probably the P6T Deluxe V2, but it's quite a bit more expensive.

I just have never used MSI.

Don't get the MSI. I keep hearing problems with it almost every day. Get the vanilla Asus P6T

Hrmpf.

Problem ladies....

So I got the 920, P6T, 6GB of OCZ and Scythe Mugen 2....

INstalled it all perfectly.... Connect my 8800GTS up and switch it on.... No signal. None. Nada.

No errors seemed to be coming from the motherboard, but not that I could check much. My GFX works, as I am currently posting from my old setup. What's up? I can't figure it out for the life of me. Before you ask, all connections were perfect. Tried both PCIe slots and nothing. Halp?

Ram in orange slots?
Fans start?
Tried only 2 sticks, even one stick at a time? (look for mobo manual for preferred slots when doing 2 and 1 channel)
Reset CMOS?

you sure the mobo speaker was connected?  usually that'll give you the error code (# of beeps) and from there we can diagnose

is there a LED on your mobo that is supposed to light up when it is receiving power?

Well, the upgrade is complete.

It works and runs perfectly.

Out of interest, is the idle temperature of 31C for my i7 normal? My E6600 usually sat at around 25C, if not less. Just wondering.

My final upgrade will be 2 SSDs and a new DX11 graphics card at the end of the year. For now, the i7, 6GB of ram and P6T should do the job nicely. Already noticing some pretty awesome improvements.

That sounds like a great plan! Good to hear you got it all sorted out, awsome PC.

31C sounds normal for a i7.  i know they run hot.  i dont have one though.  was paste preapplied on the mugen 2 or did you have to apply it yourself?

my i7 idles at 38-44c. 31c sounds great for stock. (well the 44c isn't really idle tbh, but you get the idea)
