I'm essentially looking for a way to replicate everything I have on my laptop to another machine.. (Programs, settings, media ..etc). what is the best way to do this. Norton ghost? .. would there be a conflict with drivers etc, or will it know better? I've actually used Nghost before but it was years ago, and only for backup sakes (I don't think I ever fully restored from it).

TIA!

I don't think you can use Ghost because the hardware will be markedly different (like you mentioned, there would be driver issues too).  Plus you would need to reactivate the same copy of windows (assuming its the copy that came installed on the laptop), which may or may not be tricky.  I think the best bet would be to backup all your files and then reload windows and put all your backup onto the PC, but I think you probably don't want to do that if you don't have to.

I prefer Acronis True Image myself.  In theory you should be able to use the Windows Sysprep utility to help with this.  What you would do is use Sysprep to remove SIDs and other security identifiers, and set up a mini-PNP to run on the next bootup.  Then you would boot to the True Image disk and make an image.  Once installed onto the laptop and booted, the SIDs should be regenerated and the PNP should hopefully pick up new hardware and allow for proper driver installation.

However, there could still be issues with this.  Whether you image or not the HAL should be the same for both systems, because the PNP would not replace this.  If you are coming from a system that isn't using a HAL for a multi-core system and you are moving to one, this will cause issues.

There is also the possibility that the IDE controller drivers are so far off that even with the PNP the system will simply refuse to boot.

I should add that the laptop is vista and the new machine is windows 7.

So wait.  You're trying to migrate programs and data, but not the OS?  If that is what you are trying to do, then no it isn't possible.  Yes, you can easily enough move your data over, but programs put files in so many locations and the registry that you simply cannot move most installed applications between systems.  They must be reinstalled.

There should be a profile exporter, usually in the tools folder of the install disk/image.

No I would do the OS as well. If need be I could do an OS upgrade later if I wanted to.

I think that's why he said a mortal version.  That is all high-end data center management there.  Major $$$$$

Hmm I have experience with copying software to another PC (programs, games), most of them work fine, some don't and need reinstall (Photoshop). But with porting OS from one PC to another, with different hardware will be a problem. The best case scenario is a system repair will be needed when booting the 1st time. I do backups with Norton Ghost if that helps.

Nothing sounds really promising.. To avoid issue I'm probably going to have to do it the hard way. I am going to back my lappy up anyways. I forgot about the aforementioned acronis product. I have used it as well, and will probably use it again.

It sounds like it would end up a disaster with very little working and you'd need to reinstall things.

I'm liking acronis for general backup. It allows you to setup an ftp connection and backup off site.. woot.

A friend recommended http://www.laplink.com/pcmover . He's a network engineer and says that's what they use. I'm going to try it.
