Hey, I would like to get a sound system pretty much exclusively for listening to music for around 300-400$, possibly a little bit more, but thats about the limit. Im not looking for 5.1 or anything right off the bat, more along the lines of a good system that I can upgrade in the future by adding a sub, extra speakers whatever. Unfortunately, I have no idea what to get and/ or look for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The only thing I have currently to help is an iPod, a laptop I use for music that has standard ports as well as an HDMI port, and a crappy sony shelf system.

Karma for (good) help, and thanks for your time.

At that price range you'll get only an integrated-amp, or the loudspeakers.
Best for your knowledge is to go out, in stores, and listen to different stereo systems.
You'll see where your taste of music lands as for budget wise.
Unfortunately at this kind of budget bracket you may only rely on shelf systems as you call them.

What about using a so called "Home audio system in a box" such as this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6882105293
(I have always dreamed of having a speaker in the top corner of each of my corners, lol) or would that just not work at all for music?
Also, what about something like this:

+

And then playing from laptop to receiver to speakers? Or Would I also need a pre-amp or something (I really have no idea what all is needed for an audio system)

EDIT: I could also try and get an old used receiver, or a cheap one, something like this:

and then replace it at a later point.

The first link you provided is crap, avoid cinema speaker sets for music.

You need a stereo amp - http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/prod … ID=5002300
and stereo speakers - you need to go to the store an listen to them like Jean said.

After you made a selection of speakers come back and ask for advice again and I can help make the decision if you want.

If you wanna go with PC speakers- let me know and I will find stuff just as good or even better.

Also what source would you be using to listen, CD player, tuner?
Do you have vinyls?
I'm old tech, I know.  I'm pretty much satisfied with what I have at home.
If your thinking MP3 and other electronically stored type then follow what .Sup says, he knows his stuff while I know f... all about it.
I will reinforce on go out and listen, don't buy from the net even if it "looks neat".
Basically your ears are doing the job when you listen to music not your eyes.
