Title says it. recommend me one.

Friend of mine wants to build a computer. He wants to use a Q9950 CPU, so what mainboard would he require if not using the P5Q Pro for an ATI?

cheers

Any Socket 775 Motherboard?

Why not the P5Q Pro?

Wait, not sure I understand your question... It's worded badly.

Ok, lemme try again.

He wants to use a Q9950 CPU, so he needs a Socket 775. I was told the P5Q Pro is awsm, but I´m not sure they can hold Nvidia cards.
So, what Mainboard would he need for any suggested Card?

Hope that made it a bit clearer.

Yeah man, they can, however, you can't SLi. Because its a crossfire board.

Yeah, they can still run a single NVIDIA card, or even two, but just not working together in SLI.

I've got a GTX 275, bought on ebay for about €180. I can really notice the difference between it and my old 4870 1GB.

It falls under the budget by about €40 in general so you got some money to spend on something else too! It's probably not worth buying something to fancy though when the next gen cards coming soon!

Pretty sure he meant Q9550???

That's my guess...

If I get my comp before DX11 cards are out, I am getting either a GTX 260 or 275, and maybe waiting until BF3 is close to release (and Official System Requirements are out ) to get a DX11 card after that, when the nearly inevitable price war starts and costs go down, which should hopefully coincide with me getting a job/having had a job and saved up some $$$...

What's everybody's suggestion on that, is that a good decision, and 260 or 275?

Both are good cards (@ Hijacking nick). You won't be displeased with either of them. It boils down to if you have the money to spend, go for the 275, but the 260 will run anything you want.

Indeed, I'm running a 8800GTX and a 8800GTS 512mb on a X38 board.

Can't use them in SLI, but I can dual GPU fold as well as use the second card as PhysX

Running a 9800GT w/ a P5Q Pro right here, as I type.  I want a GTX 275, though.

Jeez, I´ma nub. Next time I have to concentrate a bit more.

Of course I meant 9550. As for the Mainboard, he´s not planning for SLI/Crossfire, so he should be fine.

Any specific 260 or 275? The only ones I seem to find in retail top at 1700 mb in memory. The few ones I overlooked so far seem to have lesser memory and chip speed than a 4870 2GB?!

thx so far guys, Karmas around!

You only need more memory if you're playing on higher resolutions. 1GB will do you for 1650x1050, and maybe a bit higher.

Hm, but the 4870 with 2gigs costs 190€, with higher chip speed than 260/275 for equal pricing. So why take a 260/275?

Meh i'd go for a 2GB 4870 over a 260... but the 275 > 4870

Just my opinion.

GTX 260 is equals to HD 4870, GTX 275 is bit faster than HD 4890.

To see how big waste the 2GB is, I can get a HD 4890 1GB that is quite a bit faster than HD 4870 2GB for like 165€.

Wouldn't be a bad buy. its 170€ (wasn't sure what site to use though) being ATi is also leaves the option open to go crossfire if he gets the P5Q-PRO

[hijack]I could get the system I'm looking at from a builder as a custom set up for ~$50-60 more than if I build it myself. Is a 3 year warranty potentially worth that $50-60???

(I'm not really good at tech stuff, but I know people who work in Tech fields, who could probably be of more help for tech support)  idk if it's worth extra for warranty coverage[/hijack]

Also, what is the best relatively cheap GFX card I could get if I want good performance and want to wait for DX11 before getting a really nice card???

GTX 260 or something else???

I can get a GTX 260 for $145 @ newegg, or a comparable HD4870 for the same...

I'm currently leaning to Nvidia, but am not set on anything either...

Build's Likely specs:

CPU: Phenom 2 940/955 w/ Xigmatek Dark Knight or Scythe Mugen 2
Mobo: GA-MA790X-UD4P
RAM: OCZ Platinum AMD Special 8GB ddr2 1066/OCZ Gold DDR2 1066
PSU: Corsair 620W modular
Case: Cooler Master 590 w/ 5-6 fans
OS: Vista Home Premiumx64/7 Home Premium x64
Monitor: ASUS 22" 2ms Widescreen
HDD: Samsung f1 1TB

Cost w/o GFX: ~$1310

Budget for now(excluding DX11 upgrade costs): ~$1450-1500

How not good are you? Cause if you don´t temper with the components themselves, they each have at least 2 years warranty, if something should brake. The actual building of the PC is pretty easy. And fun!

I went through it a few months ago. The last time before that I build a PC was seven years back. Took me the whole day, but that´s because I was very patient and cautios, helped a friend taking apart his laptop and got some serious trouble with the retarded CPU cooler´s clamps

I've never really messed with tech stuff much before, other than figuring out the parts on my current PC, just looking at them, and dusting it out with air cans a couple times.

About the only thing I've ever done is reseat RAM, lol.

Then I would suggest you take a buddy with some knowledge and build your first PC on your own!
It´s really not that hard, all you need to know is written in the manuals anyway plus Plug & Play makes it hard to misplace calbes etc. If you can handle a screwdriver.
