Being in .0 really renewed my EVE experience. I am so fed up with the same old boring mission running.

0.0 turns Eve from one of the most dull games available into one of the most intense and immersive.

yeah but it takes you like 6 months of mind-numbing skill training and monotonous mission-running to even be up to the starting scratch in 0.0

and dont try and sell me the idea of being a 'tackler' or anything like that... boring as shit. when you've played competitive-pvp in games like WoW for years, and then some sci-fi geek tries to sell you the idea of orbiting a ship whilst firing a tractor-beam laser for 5 minutes as 'immersive, intense action'... you just want to smear your poop on their chest. all of the small-scale fights ive been involved with in EVE, or all the pvp-videos ive seen on youtube between smaller fleets look dull as hell. 3 microscopic ships circling around one slightly bigger ship, auto-firing a laser every 2 seconds. the game practically plays itself. zzz.

I'm a Tackler, Sniper, Cap Support, Cyno, Scout and soon to be Dictor pilot. Don't underestimate a something as important as a Tackler. We had a HAC pilot tackle a Paladin (Amarr Marauder - Worth around 1.5b ISK) in the middle of it's mission with full stage agro. The Paladin died, and with it 5b worth of fittings. A ship you need to train close to 6/9 months for to fly properly was killed by an low skilled HAC pilot, who had a web and scrambler on it's ship. That ship is 40m with fittings.

... i dont 'underestimate' the role. i just find nothing fun, engaging, immersive or exciting AT ALL in watching my ship orbit around something with a laser-beam slowing it down. you do literally nothing. right-click, set orbit, click your weapon... and then sit there for 5 minutes whilst everyone else slowly knocks it down. if that's what you call exhilarating mmo-pvp then fuck me, runescape must be like a nirvana to you.

i love eve's concept and love reading about it... but playing it is part text-based MUD, part point and click adventure game. it's a dire experience compared to the high-paced fluidity of other mmo's combat and action.

I like the way you dont actually have to pay for eve though, that's nice.

Anyway, i wouldn't write it off until you're out in null sec fucking around, it's markedly better. But i guess it takes time to get out there, and the initial few days of eve don't exactly sell the game well.

what do you mean you dont actually have to pay for eve? it has a subscription. paying via ISK is only accessible for the players that have already spent their £50 quid on 6 month's worth of character-building, surely? seems like a bit of a gimmick to me. i would honestly love to get into EVE, the universe sounds varied and brilliant and full of dynamic and engrossing greatness... but then i download it, start a trial, play for a few days and just realize i've spent ~20 hours staring at a glorified IRC chat-screen with a black, space-themed background as i point and click my way around absolute nothingness. the combat is too uninspiring and uninvolving to really hook me in and compel me to 'want' to grit-through the boring start-up crap.

Yep, but its scarily easy to pay by isk. Today i popped a ship, that if i convert all the loot to isk, i'll be able to pay for my account for 3 or so months.

And i've only just got 10mil SP, so i'm not exactly a hardcore player. Also, things like playing in a good corp are a must, otherwise id gets insanely stale. It may just be that eve isnt for you, and then fair enough. But i dont think many people give it enough time.

yeah, i'd definitely agree with that. if only the design team put their heads together to make the introductory phases show off more of the game's incredibly diverse and rich content, instead of focusing all their efforts on 0.0 sec, then perhaps EVE would seriously contend against other big-title mmo's... for now though, i think the vast majority of potential players are in my position: love hearing about it, love reading about it, but find the actual gameplay experience a terrible bore.

100% agree that the first few days are chaotic at best, and tbh the game isn't flexible enough to meld your own way for another few weeks at least. I'd say it probably does have a terrible new-user retention rate because of that.

see, for me i've really enjoyed the trial each and every time i've played it (all 12 or so times) but i've never felt enough of a compulsion to buy the game or subscribe any further. i just need the motivation to be pushed over that edge - to actually commit to the game financially. if i wanted to make one of my trial accounts into a fully-fledged account now, would i basically have to fork out £40 for the game and the included month-subscription?

Grinding is IMO the biggest issue in this game. The pvp is really fun once you get into it (small gang/solo), but isk making is terrible. Tedsex seems to have much better luck than I.

The PVE is terrible and it makes me want to stab myself in the forehead with a pocket knife.

isnt there some ultra cheap way of doing it through steam atm?

+ im only getting good luck because im ratting atm, chaining some good triple spawns. when i get a mining boat out here ill have more of a steady income, and im investing time in manufacturing too, to get a nice passive income.

the idea behind to it get a 2nd acc, fund it totally on plex's so i can stop wasting SP on this char in indy shit.

Lol.  There is no grind in this game, because it's time based.  Making isk is easy as fuck.  You just do missions over and over, or go rat.  Hell, even ratting isn't as bad of a grind as it is in other MMO's.

You'd be quite wrong. I've been playing since late '04.

Running level 4s for 5 hours to afford a HAC to pvp in is dumb.

That's nothing, honestly.  Go play an MMO like Maplestory.  The max level limit is 200, and it took 4 years for it the first person to reach it.  The first person ever, who also played for like 17 hours a day, grinding nonstop.  It takes 5 hours to level up when you're level 50.  Not to mention, it's just pure killing shit.  You go in the exact same circle, killing the same shit, for days.  Trust me, this game does not have a hard grind.

I'm not comparing it to anything, I'm saying it's the biggest issue in the game. And it is. Regardless of other shit games. It's the reason why I hardly ever play.
