Well, I can't speak for Harvard, but at Yale, I've had a couple with tweed, a couple with regular jackets, and one with a sweater vest (very classy). About the private societies, those are much more facets of Harvard and Princeton than Yale. Secret societies aren't really meant to be drinking clubs, and are too exclusive to copy the English. The finals clubs and easting clubs (respectively) are much more egregious examples of what you defined. I think Yale was pretty content to steal the residential colleges from Oxford and Cambridge.
