Is it possible to transfer files from one computer to another with just a standard USB connection to both, or do you need some type of software to facilitate the process?

You need a USB cable with bridge chip. Google, they are inexpensive.

Definitely better off doing it via a network.

Or just uploading onto a website and downloading it again on the other side

Yeah this makes sense with a 0.5mb/s upload rate and 50GB of data to upload.

worst case, you could drop one hdd into the other case.

easier to use a crossover ethernet cable.  fast speeds, direct connection to both computers.

You may not even need a crossover depending on the on board NIC.  Some will auto detect the direct NIC to NIC connection.

Yeah, people always claim that you can do it with regular ethernet, but I've always used crossover.

I have never needed to resort to wired usb connection. Even my 13y old PC has NIC. A short crossover cable doesn't cost much, and pretty much everything has NICs these days (if doesn't, you can get em for like 5€).

It does work, at least with some on board NIC's.  I can connect my DFI SLI-D and Abit IP35-Pro (not sure which detects it) with a standard patch cable which I've done for very large file transfer for a little extra bandwidth as the NIC's are gigabit and my router is 10/100.

Are you guys serious?

You've never had it work?

I've never had it fail. Ever (except back before it was supported - but that's kind of obvious).

Gigabit has no need for your mortal crossover cables!

i think it has a lot to do with make/manuf of the card.  i had two gigabit cards, one an intel and one a netgear and they couldn't negotiate the link.

Not explicitly, although one manufacturer may coincidentally not ship auto sensing ports. An Ethernet port can be MDI or MDI-X, which only means the transmitting/receiving pairs are swapped. An MDI -> MDI-X works, MDI -> MDI doesn't; in which case you would use a crossover.  Some ports, at first only a select few on switches/hubs, could auto-switch depending on if the connection worked at first, or not. Most modern NICs are auto sensing.

Well in my case, there is a guy working for me and he needs to transfer files from a desktop to a laptop. They sit 5 feet away from each other. So I could try the ethernet cable BUT I think he already had one that was specifically for the purpose we're discussing and he couldn't get it working...Is there any type of software that would help aid the ethernet connection, and the communication from computer to computer?

Or, maybe try the usb cable with a bridge chip like .Sup mentioned...

The guy did say it would be nice to have his own "Private Network" communicating between the two computers. This would have to be done over my local wireless network so couldn't he just have both of the computers on the same Windows Workgroup, and would they be able to communicate?

Also...He has a shit ton of programs for anti-virus, anti-spyware, blocking programs...I told him, if you want your computers to communicate, you need to create exceptions, or disable that shit.

If he has an ethernet cable, it should work. You have to set it up like regular windows file sharing, so yes, same workgroup. Secondly, they both have to have IP addresses in the same network. Scroll down to assigning the IP addresses if that sounds unfamiliar.

Assign the computers like this:

Desktop IP: 192.168.0.1
Laptop IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask (Both): 255.255.255.0
Ignore the default gateway or DNS servers.

Doesn't sound very practical, unhooking cable and connecting it again...
