i know there's angles to light, and interplay with shadow. i have a problem with depth perception ~ so what looks right in the viewfinder is somehow off on the monitor.
and vice versa. when i see an example, like the one you posted above (especially in b/w) it looks right to me. and when i go to recreate it, nada.

Yeah, totally. Tbh, I can't recreate that picture. Well, I know what I'd have to do but eh.. it wouldn't turn out how I'd want.
On the light front, there are a few good books to learn some stuff. I've lost my copy (it's somewhere at home), but I'd check out Light: Science and Magic. It's just principles of lighting, not some set of tricks etc from a particular photographer.

nice. i noticed in southeast Utah (it's high desert, mostly) that light was especially unforgiving.
there's LR & PS ways to bring it out (i'm thinking fill) but it's not the same. i'm going thru some now, and there's one taken in the morning that is perfect.
except the position of the sun. thanks minty i bookmarked that, will pick it up soon. maybe someone else's view on light will help.

Yeah, I can imagine that the light is particularly unforgiving out there. And of course there are thing like fill (ie. make sure you shoot in RAW format), but that only works to a certain extent.

I noticed last week that Yahoo added some new applications to it's mail service. One of them was the ability to easily add you flickr photos to messages.

Ok, so I'm applying for this casual photography gig at uni. Tell me, does this make me sound like a wanker?
Hi,
I realise it’s a little late, but I noticed in Blitz (S2.W6) an advertisement for casual photographers. I am interested in this opportunity, as I have been seeking a way to combine my interest in photography with my university life. I have also been interested in gaining experience into live music and club/party photos, as a way of expanding my photographic horizons.
About me: I’m 20 years old and currently in my second year of a Civil Engineering/Commerce double degree.
Photographic Experience: I don’t have a “portfolio” per se, however I can link you to an online gallery of my work - http://www.flickr.com/photos/amcintyre/
Within the gallery, more notable work would include photos taken for the Australian Air Force Cadets (there should be a link to the collection on the right side of the gallery). From 2007-2009 I served as my Squadron’s “official” photographer, documenting events and activities as well as organising annual portraits for in excess of 100 cadets. Many of these photos were also used in an editorial capacity, as part of the Squadron’s regular newsletter.
The rest of my gallery consists of photos from a variety of other genres – anything from travel photography to portrait sessions with friends.

Mm, but I'm not sure if that would fall under something being covered by Arc (the student union group who produces the Blitz magazine.. to which I am applying) OR if this is just using the Roundhouse@UNSW as a venue.
