Last night, I played Wake 2007 for many hours as the commander. I noticed that kills were registering into my stats even though I spent most of my time commanding from the safety of the USMC carrier and was not fighting. I killed many enemies with artillery strikes. I did not realize that these kills register as actual kills into your stats. It certainly seems that way from what I can see.
You're correct. You can also use these to achieve badges, such as Ground Defense or AA, but not the class badges.
