That's the price for civilians. Police departments in the US can buy things like MP5s or M4A1s for relatively cheap. For the civilian market, it is much more difficult. The National Firearms Act prevents you from purchasing a fully automatic weapon made after a certain date, which limits the amount of weapons available for a civilian to buy. Naturally, this drives the price up quite a bit.

And then there are all the hoops to jump through for buying it. You need to get authorization from your local chief of police, you need to pay a $200 fee to the ATF, and I think undergo a background check. If you check out fine, you can get the weapon. This has to be done for each Class 3 weapon.

For the Class 3 & NFA items you have to complete the proper form, provide passport photos, finger print cards and get local law enforcement signature.
You then send those items, along with $200 to the ATF for their review and approval.

You can also setup a Trust and avoid the photos, fingerprints and local law enforcement signature.

This is typical for suppressors, short barrel shotguns (SBS), short barrel rifles (SBR) and fully-automatics.

It sucks.

Well shit, it really sucks paying an extra $200 on top of your $40 grand gun.

It sure does, but you have to pay that $200 just to cut the barrel shorter on your rifle or shotgun. If you want a suppressor that costs $400+ you have to pay $200 for that too.

Still I think this one is overpriced, particularly since I've seen prettier HK21 "Kurz"-conversions.

Or just preventing yourself from getting deaf and blind from rapid firing 7.62 NATO from a relatively extremely short barreled weapon.

Something tells me certain states and possibly the US government would have serious issue with sending that across state lines.  To get it here you'd probably have to completely disassemble it.

Besides shooting without ear protection or less ear protection (something more comfortable) you are making less noise for your neighbors if you are lucky enough to legally shoot on your property.

Well, you can also tack on $775 per minute of firing for that thing, unless you want to hand load 850 rounds.

Fired a couple before, although didn't bother with ear protectors as we weren't emptying multiple 30 round mags into a tree or anything like that. Why do you say if you're lucky enough to be able to shoot on your property? Can't everyone do that (within reason)?

And I thought silencers are supposed to degrade pretty quick, or is that an urban legend?

you can't fire weapons in most residential areas.  do people really think the US is just full of gun totin' hillbillies shooting everything on their property?

you mean, we aren't? steelie, if you find yourself in Utah . . .

there are, from state to state differing laws. there are different ordinances from town to town. despite anyone elses opinion, i've adapted to my local laws and i'm a happy and proud firearms owner. (gun shows ftw)
