7.62x51mm was designed to be fired from scoped rifles, full size battle rifles or battle rifles with shortened barrel at most, not fully automatic weapons with a SMG length barrel. Apart from it being too close to your face, I imagine quite a large amount of excess powder burning outside of the barrel causing searchlight-muzzleflash.
