Recently, I have been looking into getting a cheap gaming PC for christmas since at 15, spending shit loads of $$$ on a monster rigs with i7s and GTX 295s doesn't really look attractive.

Anyway, Ive come up with this:

Processor                    Intel Pentium Dual Core E5300 2.66GHz @ 3.00GHz
Processor Cooler    Intel Approved CPU Cooler
Power Supply            Corsair HX 450W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply
Memory                       Corsair XMS2 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX Dual Channel
Hard Drive            Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM
Case                    Coolermaster Elite 335 Midi Tower Case - Black
Optical Drive            LG GH22NS40 22x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter
Graphics Card            Palit GeForce GTS 250 1024MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Motherboard            Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2L Intel G41 Motherboard
Sound Card            High Definition 7.1 OnBoard Sound Card
There is another rig with the exact same specs but with a HD4850 instead of a GTS 250.
This come to a total price of £389.99 while the one with the HD4850 came with a total of £379.99 (currently on offer for £349.99).

Link (GTS 250)
Link (HD4850)

Anyway, is this a good price?

The one with 4850 is obviously better value, as the 4850>GTS250. They both seem somewhat overpriced, though.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

what can I say, I forgot my chrystal ball in car. There is so much new stuff (specially graphics cards) coming out, its impossible to tell at this point what will be a good buy at xmas.

There is absolutely no point in geting a GTS 250 or HD 4850 at xmas tho, thats for sure.

Not bad if you really don't want to build it self. If it's for christmas, however, there will be new stuff out and old stuff will be cheaper. I'd wait till november at least.

As pre-built systems go that's not bad value.

But then I don't even know what a GTS 250 is. It sounds like one of those renamed G92s.....

I see your point (DX11 etc), but wouldnt those new components not cost alot? Especially the new DX11 cards. I could probably live without DX11 for a year or two anyway.

Cheers Freezer. I actaully couldn't decide on which was better.

Of course, but that also means huge price drops for current hardware.

Meh, for about 5 minutes until the current/old stuff that's any good sells out.

That's always the problem with waiting like that. You stop paying attention for a week or two and all the old good stuff disappears and then it gets expensive again due to rarity.

I promise, HD4xxx and GT2xx will not be in short supply anytime soon

Ha I remember the days when DDR ram was twice as expensive as, at that time new, the DDR2

Actually, it's more CPUs that I always get caught out like that by. GPUs do tend to get quite cheap.

You have to pretty quick off the mark to get the good value CPUs when the new ranges get released most of the time.

I thought we were talking about NEW stuff? Not 3 editions of the same thing.

But I admit, GPUs don't suffer from this nearly as much as CPUs do.

My advice... make a wishlist on Newegg. By the time Christmas gets closer, there might be better equipment with better deals.

Good luck!

My point is that the old stuff will hang on for a good while even after a new series is released.
