Okay so Windows Update decided it would be fun to restart my desktop computer at home while I was away (in a different province for 3 weeks). This computer has a password lock to login to my profile which I'm not willing to give to people at home since its my primary password.  However, I really need to get this computer started since I need to have a program running on it as soon as possible.  Is there any way for me to remotely connect to that computer and just login to it?  Normally I use logmein but since the computer hasnt loaded my profile yet logmein isnt running on it and is shown as offline.

Helpppppppppp meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

What version of windows is it?  the only way I would imagine you could do it is with the built in windows remote access (not sure but it works in server 2003) if it's xp home or vista home your out of luck for that though.

Well this computer here is Vista Home Premium but I could find one with Ultimate or something else.  The other computer that is locked is Window 7 Ultimate

The home premium pc will have the part of remote desktop you need already (it can remote into another pc but cannot be remoted into)

The 7 ultimate should have the ability though.  You'll need someone else (or google) to help with how to do it as i've never really needed it outside my home network, but you should be able to use RDC built into windows to do what you want as long as it is powered on.

you probably need to enable remote desktop on the home PC by adding your home account to the 'remote desktop group'.  also if its behind a router, you need to forward port 3389.

Ends up logmein can log into locked computers before they load into windows, my family was just too lazy to turn the computer on when I told them to

I'm not sure about 7U, but in Vista admin account is disabled by default, but worth a shot,

Get them to reboot,

Mash F8

"Safe Mode with Networking"

login as Administrator.

Unless you're "smart" enough to set an admin password you should be in.

I obviously set my account as administrator

Windows Update shouldn't be restarting the computer without confirmation from the user, smells like foul play to me...

Nonono, Windows has another account built in Called Administrator.

Unless you specifically said to use teh Administrator acocunt as your main one, it should show up beside your acocunt in safemode.
(Assuming of course that they enabled it in 7)

i did not think home edition allowed you to RDP, only to request support intervention through invitation.

RDP is great!

I've been having a lot of fun with the RDP client on my iPhone.

No chance of the OP getting this working without having set it up in advance though....

Logmein is magic.

RDP on the other hand is turned off by default. If you haven't turned it on (set it up in advance), it doesn't work.

I use WinAdmin - it costs money though. It's great. RDP client, works on most versions of Windows (not Server 2008) VGA only....

Having RDP access to my home machine and SSH access to everything else, everywhere is awesome.

I never saw much value in services like logmein since I can always get to my stuff via RDP. For relatives who have home versions of windows OS's I've been using GBdrige and its built in VNC client.

Bottom line here though is that if you don't have it set up its not likely you will get to it.

It's the ease of doing it no matter the OS.. just being able to say go here and put in a name and email and Boom! .. you're on. It's nice when helping out the complete computer illiterate. Then, well, it kind of grows on you. It is free after all.
