Oh when I studied at Uni (computer science) we had MSDNAA accounts but so did other departments in our school such as the electrical engineering department which was also stationed in same building.

I just looked it up. School of Engineering Sciences also has a subscription.

In any case, it's not like I exclusively use any of MS's products in physics, and I'm pretty sure that lots of other departments are in the same shoes. So there's no need for the departments to have a subscription.
