Well today was an very eventful day at the U.N. - old friends getting together - the " salt dogs " hazing the new " boots " ( Obama was first in line for paddle whack )

and after they were able to sort out bathroom buddies and sleeping orders - they got down to business

of bitching, finger pointing, group hugs, some shit that they thought up on the way up to the stand

Only with issues in the Security Council. Anything else is a general consensus.

The League of Nations failed because of a lack of action by the parties involved. The UN will fail as well. No significant progress is ever made, arguments never cease, and generally NOTHING GETS DONE. It's just a day for diplomats and heads of state to bitch and moan.

The President can veto.

What people tend to forget is that Veto power only works in the Security Council, it is not valid in Human Rights, Economic and Social, Disarmament committee or other GA committees. Actually, the P5 do agree on quite a lot of issues, or they just abstain. If it's not something directed towards their interest (US and Israel, China and Sudan), they will generally abstain.
