To use it or not to...

USB thumb drives are inexpensive nowadays but is it really worth it? For 2 GBs of ram I would need around 4Gbs of storage on the USB drive (that's approx 10€ for the drive) but I rather use the key for storage if this Windows feature isn't as good as advertised by Microsoft. Anyone using ReadyBoost?

Just get more RAM. It's not a lot more expensive, and it's far faster.

As for me, I don't even use swap on any of my computers. Even on my laptop with 2GB RAM, I get away with plenty of margin.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Yeah was thinking of possibly putting both in - RAM+thumb drive

Panzer the expected arrival of the SSD is on Monday

Ready boost only really helps if you're running some ancient PC with 1GB RAM or less. Ready boost seems to swap more aggressively than normal swap space so for PCs with enough ram it actually tends to hurt performance - at least that was my experience.

Oh and don't put a windows swap partition on an SSD. It'll wear the drive out in no time.

tbh the read / write ratio of page file is so high, the drive won't wear pretty much at all if you got decent amount of ram. But you can just stick it to one of the HDDs. Its not much difference with lots of ram anyway...

I did some quick tests with a pagefile & SSDs.

default Vista Ultimate x64
4GB RAM
all the normal apps (firefox, thunderbird, word, VLC, etc)
no games, photoshop

After 24h of use there were well over 100GB of writes to the SSD. That can't be good in the long run.

I have no idea what you'd need page file with >4GB RAM, not to talk about why there would be 100GB write in 24 hours. MS recommends having page file on SSD because thats where you are getting a huge boost in performance if you need to resort in page file. And quite a few SSD enthusiasts have said page file on SSD is all right, maybe even recommendable.

I will look into that.

Hell if I knew. Windows (Vista at least) seems to cache stuff to the pagefile even if there is enough ram

If you had 4GB of RAM on a 64 bit system, would you even NEED a pagfile?

I see no reason
