Before I start blogging to you guys like a maniac, how safe is a router shared wireless connection within a home, considering you don't live with some wizzkids?

Secondly, do any of you guys no a semi decent freeware firewall?

Depends on the wireless encryption you have set up.
If you have...

The router would normally have a pre-installed firewall - then you have your PC one - the windows one as a minimum.

I use AVG, on top of BT's free built in modem protection

You can set the wireless passwords and choose the encryption level in your router settings, easy to set up.

WPA is safe from anything but a brute force attack.
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

It is 128-bit WEP and I don't mean "safe from outsiders entering through the router", but rather "safe from housemates".

And AVG is a virusscanner right, not a defensive barrier?

128-bit WEP can be hacked in something like 45 minutes tops. With just a laptop that can see your network.

if you can, switch to WPA.

WEP is not secure at all.

IMO software firewalls are useless. It's better to secure the system and the network, because if something has actually penetrated the system or network, you're fucked anyhow.

It is not my network, I'm staying with some people and am on their wifi signal with my laptop, using a password they provided. The question is, can they (accidentally) access my machine/read what I type on say this forum? Remember they're not wizzkids, not at all.

Any unencrypted traffic can easily be ready by anyone.

EDIT: Disable file sharing.

Well, not by accident. But anyone with basic understanding of computers and google can find out what other people are doing on the network. If you want security you need to a VPN or ssh tunnel.

Accidentally? Not likely.

But I would recommend COMODO Firewall. Very good program, IMO. Has saved my ass multiple times already.

That COMODO package looks great, but both COMODO and ZoneAlarm do not work under Win 2k

Ohh,.. I couldn't agree with you more, but I'm in someone else's house on the first floor, while the router is on the ground floor.

Well yes sure, but you can't expect me to start wiring someone else's house, drilling holes in the floor for the cables as well?
