Director Roman Polanski has been taken into custody on a 31-year-old US arrest warrant, Swiss police have confirmed.

The film-maker, 76, was detained on Saturday as he travelled to Switzerland to collect a lifetime achievement award at the Zurich Film Festival.
Mr Polanski admitted unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl in the US in 1977, but fled to France before sentencing.
In recent years, he has tried to have the rape case dismissed, but a US judge formally rejected his requests in May.

Mr Polanski was initially indicted on six felony counts and faced up to life in prison.
He claims the original judge, who is now dead, arranged a plea bargain but later reneged.
Earlier this year, Judge Peter Espinoza agreed there was misconduct by the judge in the original case, but said Mr Polanski must return to the US to apply for dismissal.

Mr Polanski's lawyers said he would not return to the US because he would be immediately arrested as a fugitive.
The victim at the centre of the case, Samantha Geimer, has also asked for the charges to be dropped, saying the continued publication of details "causes harm to me, my husband and children".
She has also called the court's insistence that Mr Polanski appear in person "a cruel joke".

That's some awesome justice work to the US, basically getting him to go to the US just to get arrested in an attempt to get it dismissed. haha.

omg, you think that a thirteen year old girl who volunteers sex has any idea of what she is doing?

Statutory rape is very serious, and this guy took advantage of a young girl.

I don't care how well liked and respected or talented he is. It doesn't change the fact that he raped someone.

He should face a jail term, like anyone else would.

Since he was indicted don't thik it applies.

As a general rule I don't think 45 yr olds should be doing stuff to 13 yr olds.

None. He plead guilty then fled the country. That tends to get under the skin of law enforcement and, generally speaking, the US gov't will not cease to pursue extradition in cases of flight from prosecution.

And to all re: The wishes of the victim. Strictly speaking the US justice system (in cases like this) doesn't work for victims. The plaintiff in this case IS the US (People vs. Roman Polanski). So though the victim may want prosecution waived the justice system considers it a crime against the people as well as the individual (social mores and all that).

Good on the US Justice System. Its statutory rape no matter how you look at it and he should be punished for it. I dont care if he makes movies, other stars have gone to jail too and so should he.
The whole 30 years thing is bullshit, he FLED the country to avoid punishment in the first place, his sentence should be twice as harsh as it would have been. If any normal person did this they would be in jail for a very long time, he shouldnt be treated any differently.

I actually think it was pretty bad (in this case the French Cultural Minister) to say that his crime is ancient history. I mean Christ, it shouldn't matter how long its been since you committed the crime - and a pretty friggin serious one at that, its still a crime that you have to pay for. The fact that he's an award-winning director should make zero difference.

What I find laughable on the part of Polanski is his contention that the Judge was not going to honor his plea agreement. He was either too dumb or arrogant to realize (or his lawyer was too dumb or arrogant to realize) that courts are not bound by plea agreements. You can only make such an agreement with the prosecutor and even then the prosecutor can only recommend a particular sentence. In all cases the court can ignore such recommendations.

In any event IIRC he was going to be sentenced for a lesser crime and his likely punishment would have been time served (45 days or so).
