I'll just take a stab in the dark and say it's a cultural difference. Work ethic. Or, not so much that they don't give a shit, but more that they don't want to learn because it's "boring". They don't have the personal work ethic to suck it up and just do the work. On the other hand, that kind of thing is instilled in the asian cultures.. and thus even with less schooling they can still outscore students from the USA.
Puritan work ethic is still instilled. It just depends where you are tbh. With Asians it isn't a work ethic, but more as a philosophy. Asians believe study hard = good grades = good job. Sometimes it doesn't really correspond since I know a lot of top kids who can't handle simple real life work situations. Asian students are great at regurgitating shit, but telling them an open ended question they are fucked.
I guess you could say it's a philosophy, but IMO it's still their "work ethic".

Ah, and now you have reached the actual problem with the education system. In most places it's about ROTE learning and regurgitating answers. To get good marks one has to "play the game", as it was described to me in high school. While this type of learning may be easier to assess, for purposes of determining who gets into a university, it rarely teaches school kids essential problem solving and interpersonal skills... the things that are actually required within real world work situations.

Thats also true, but they can learn that also. With a great foundation of maths etc they can then do well.

Better than the 'I don't need learn nuffink cuz Imma gonna be a rapper' crowd can do.

The ones that have been educated in a Socratic education system can think by themselves and solve irl situation, but if you pull one straight from a Chinese school, they couldn't really solve anything.

Btw, it's also parenting... Asian parents go like "BE DOCTOR OR LAWYER MAKE MONEY GET ME TO HAVE RESPECT I AM YOUR FATHER I PAY FOR YOUR EDUCATION SO YOU DO GOOD IN SCHOOL"

This is true.

I don't think making school days any longer will do anything. What times to you guys have anyway? For me in Aussieland, I was at high school from 8:40am - 3:00pm each day.
8:55 - 3:15. Or 6 * 55 min periods.

You really need a mix of straight information and being able to analyze it.
I'm a history major.  If people don't know the facts, we just change the topic and analyze the crap out of that...but don't learn much about the thing we don't know the specifics of.

I'd say primary/secondary should focus a good bit on facts.  Secondary school can be a mix.  Post-secondary depends on the degree (more facts for engineers, more analysis for humanities/business types).

You know teachers are going to want more money...in California the average pay for a teacher is $72k/year...

I wonder why some conservatives are against this?  I'm for it, but only if the costs are not too much more.  I mean you realize how much they will need to raise property taxes?

Raising property taxes, or any tax for that matter, in this economy would not be helpful.

Because it's on the brink of being a part time job and the results coming out of our schools don't exactly call for higher pay raises. Only Nancy Pelosi thinks people should be rewarded for failure on such a grand scale (I'm talking about the pay raise she pushed through Congress during the height of the banking crisis). Look, I don't believe in pay scales and I don't believe in tenure. If a teacher is deserving of higher pay then they should receive it. This is why I like charter schools so much. No unions involved and the teachers are paid what they are worth.

What is a charter school? Basically just like a private school right? They don't have the same regulations, etc, etc?

Straight from wikipedia:
Charter schools are elementary or secondary schools in the United States that receive public money but have been freed from some of the rules, regulations, and statutes that apply to other public schools in exchange for some type of accountability for producing certain results, which are set forth in each school's charter.[1] Charter schools are opened and attended by choice.[2]

While charter schools provide an alternative to other public schools, they are part of the public education system and are not allowed to charge tuition. Where enrollment in a charter school is over subscribed, admission is frequently allocated by lottery-based admissions. In a 2008 survey of charter schools, 59% of the schools reported that they had a waiting list, averaging 198 students.[3] Some charter schools provide a curriculum that specializes in a certain field—e.g. arts, mathematics, etc. Others attempt to provide a better and more efficient general education than nearby public schools.

Some charter schools are founded by teachers, parents, or activists who feel restricted by traditional public schools.[4] State-authorized charters (schools not chartered by local school districts) are often established by non-profit groups, universities, and some government entities.[5] Additionally, school districts sometimes permit corporations to open chains of for-profit charter schools.
They generally have admissions tests and are run far better than normal public schools. They aren't tied down by local boards of education and as long as they are getting results, they are pretty much free to run the curriculum as they wish. Generally, kids coming out of charter schools do much better than those that don't. Even in high poverty areas the graduation rate is close to triple that of normal public schools and the kids generally go on to college. It's amazing what a positive school environment can do for kids.

They also aren't tied down by the Teachers Union so tenure and pay scales are thrown out the window. The schools want motivated teachers and that's what they get.

Fuck, no offense but your president is fucking stupid.

If your school system is a shit stain, making it longer is not going to help AT ALL. In Romania we have a big three months of vacation compared to the 2 months in Canada, and people here learn. The teachers, the students. Its school, not a fucking kindergarten.

The scholar system in America might improve if you stopped learning them second grade equations in the fucking secondary 3 for example and initiated the children to learn.
