Ok, I have some parts picked out, most I've found from other threads, the others I chose myself. I don't know of another site better than newegg, so that's where I'm looking this stuff up on. I don't really care about waiting for the newer graphics cards or processors, my computer right now can't even play Bf2 on all high, many new games I haven't been able to play at all. I can go around $1,000 USD, but preferably under that. I have the essentials right now, and I'm at a little over $800.

MOBO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … -_-Product
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … -_-Product
CPU FAN: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 0Mugen%202
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820231180
HD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6822136319
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6817189005
GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814129113
Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6811119203
Monitor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6824009194

I don't know a lot about fan cooling, or cases, and I'm almost certain that everything will work together with no problems. I haven't messed with computers in-depth in a few years. I don't know what kind of monitor to get, the one I have no sucks, and I definitely need a new keyboard, mouse, and mousepad. I also need tips on what operating system to get. There is one laptop in my house that has Vista, and that computer is really slow, though there is sooooooo much useless crap on there, and I won't even start talking about it. I'm fine with XP, but I don't know the pros/cons of each, and I don't think waiting for Windows 7 is an upside for anything. If I get a new monitor/mouse/OS/etc, the price will probably bump up above $1,000, but I just want to know if this is generally a good build.

Improvements?
Tips?
Feedback, thanks.

EDIT: I changed the GPU, CASE, PSU, and that's it I think.

Ummm....I would switch out the cpu cooler for like a dark knight, f7p,or noctua. especially if you plan on OC-ing

you can find a better PSU. I trust corsair. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6817139005 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6817139006 if you can.

you can use these savings to up your HDD to a 1TB.

Also, the case can be improved. If you want to cheap out on the case i suggest a cooler master elite. just make sure the case can fit these huge cpu coolers.

other than those, the cpu, mobo, and ram all look good.

I think you need to hold off and wait for Windows 7. No sense in sticking yourself with such an old operating system when all your hardware is still relatively new. Just make sure you get a 64 bit OS. Then you can use all that RAM (and in the future, more) and not worry about the OS being a problem. If you're going to go 64 bit, get Vista or 7. Don't waste your time with XP in 64-bit.

Actually, just looking at a quick couple reviews and specs - why not get an Intel Q9400? The Intel is only $1 more.

I don't recommend any S775 quad anymore. Its a dead socket so its better not get one when you have identical performer on newer socket from competitor.

So you're saying getting a slower processor is better simply because the socket is newer?

That phenom is better than Q9400. It's about identical to Q9450 / Q9550.

Windows 7 would'nt let me do anything that I cannot do now. Waiting would be a waste of time.

Ok thanks. Will the Noctua AM2 socket CPU fans on newegg work with the AM3 processor? Also, I couldn't find any f7p coolers, but I only looked on  newegg.

MUGEN 2 is an excellent cooler tbh. And that PSU is amongst the best choices as well. The only thing I'd cange is the GPU, possibly. Take a look at the new HD5850/5870 cards.

All right, thanks will karma when I get ten posts. What OS is best for playing games? XP or vista? Should I get Vista home premium or just Vista ultimate for $80 more? It comes with a free upgrade to Windows 7, but I don't know how legit that is, or what it's value is.

The cheapest 5850 I found was this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814150442 for $260. This will work, but I might need to go less on some other things. What is a good monitor to get?

Windows 7 will take better advantage of your four cores than so and you will have directx11 support if you get a 5xxx from ati.

Ok, thanks for feedback guys. My total comes to about $925. When does Windows 7 officially come out? Could I just get Vista Home Premium 64-bit and then use the free upgrade to windows 7? That's an extra $100. What will the retail price for 7 be? Is the free update an update to the full version?

It comes out October 22nd, iirc. Though that may be the release date here in Austria and the US date may be different.

Not sure about the upgrades, though.

Don't be one of those people who don't see any differences between XP and Vista/7

Get the Beta for 7 and then buy it or download it when it comes out.

You know ... I was just reading benchmarks about the i5-750 and the Phenom II 955 and then priced a system out and I came up with some interesting results. You can get an i5 system for not much more than what you've got there and have a build that'll spank the 955 six ways to Sunday. The only thing you'll have to shell out considerably (not even that) more for is the motherboard (Gigabyte P55-UD4), the processor (i5-750) and the RAM (OCZ 4GB Platinum DDR3-1333).

Gigabyte P55-UD4: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813128400
Intel i5-750: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819115215
OCZ Platinum 4GB DDR3-1333: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820227478

Then if you switch to the Freezer 7 Pro Rev. 2 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6835186134) you will actually save yourself about $3 over the cooler that you have there. Throw in an OS and you'll break the $1000 mark, though only by a hair. That's without any new peripherals, though. But you'll have a brand-spanking new i5.

F7P is not good for quad. Mugen 2 is couple bucks more than F7P and is in completely different world in terms of cooling performance.
