I would do a clean install of OS and then install one program at a time. See after which installation the problems starts reoccurring

I've lost my patience with trying to figure this one out.
I'm just going to switch to XP, as this issue doesn't occur there.

Man my sound just stopped working after I inserted a DVD into my drive. On Windows7. Took me an hour to figure out what the problem was. Before that my icons disappeared. And this is the final build of 7. Maybe try in safe mode and see how it goes.

Turns out the root of the crashing is having Firefox 3.5 installed on a 64bit OS; doesn't happen on most setups, there seems to be a conflict with hardware or drivers. I'm back on Vista and haven't experienced any crashing because I'm using Chrome for now. I miss my Firefox.
I might try to use a "portable" version, one that extracts to a folder and nothing else, and see how that goes.

Apparently making Firefox to "Never remember history" was the issue; I've set it to just delete history on exit, and the crashing has stopped.
