I searched first but couldn't find anything on this.  I just downloaded FRAPS (the latest version) and installed it last night.  When I try to record in game, my FPS drop all the way to 3 and the video and gameplay is really jumpy . . . to where it's impossible to play.  I average about 30 or so FPS during normal gameplay.  From what I can tell, 30 is pretty bad.  Is this due to my processor, memory, video card, etc?  Also, If I set my settings lower (currently on med and high) would this improve the performance of FRAPS recording?

I have:

AMD 2800+
ATI x850xl
2gb Corsair XMS PC3200
latest drivers for everything

Any help or suggestions are appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Well lets say your on the peak of graphics and gameplayability, so then you run recorder and it drops. So yeah lower the graphics or record in a lower quality.

I think that's right, but I OC'd it to 2.08ghz.  I know that's not a big difference.  There's all of this talk about new CPUs and such coming out.  Do you think I'm better off waiting and doing a CPU and mobo upgrade or is there something that would run on a socket A mobo that is better than what I have?  I've looked on newegg.com and haven't found anything that impressive for socket A.  Most of the mobos now have PCI-E and no AGP slot.  I have an AGP gfx card and would rather not spend the $$$ to upgrade that.

This mobo has both AGP and PCI-X. It will also support the new M2 chip when it comes out. This is the board i bought when i needed to update on a budget. Reasonable price and performs well.

Hope this helps.
