New RAM doesn't do squat!

So I've finally upgraded my 512 mb @ 800 herz RAM up to 1.5 gb @ 800 herz RAM. I STILL load slow (read: Verifying Client) and I get lag in both 64 player maps and 32 player maps.

Back when I had 512 I used to set every video setting on low, and 90% terrain distance.

Now that I got 1.5 gb, I'd expect I could set it on medium distance @ 1024 x 786 and still be able to load fast and have no lag.

People who have 1.5 tell me they have only 30 secs for the Verifying Client.

I got 2 mins. Both for 64 and 32.

I have gone to a BF2 Hardware Review site on GameSpot and they have said my hardware can meet the "medium" settings with 1024 x 786 resolution.

My hardware are as follows:

2.2 ghz Pentium 4
Geforce 6600 GT
1.5 gb RAM

The Hardware Review site had said specifically that 6600 can run safely at 1024 x 786 with no lag and with medium settings. So if my vid card is good, my RAM is good, what seems to be the problem?

Can anyone just tell me what video settings I should do? Like specific ones to lower, such as lighting or something. I really don't know about these things, and I'd be glad if you could help.

It looks like your processor is bottlenecking your system. If you have decent cooling, overclock that sucker and see if that helps.

I don't know how to overclock.

In any case, if I have to live with this processor, what settings can I lower to improve it?

Overclocking isnt that tough, it just takes time. I wrote a guide somewhere on these forums, but there are better ones on the internet.

And there isnt really anything you can change to speed it up. You can try setting your bf2 priority to 'high' in the windows task manager, but that probably won't change anything.

Some of the more technical minded people here may correct me, but I believe that a better (or freshly and properly defragmented) harddrive will help with load times since the slowest part of the load seems to be the verifying segment. You didn't post the drive that you are currently running bf2 on, but I'm fairly certain that a faster harddrive would help with the load times.

1. Run anti-spyware software.
2. delete Tempfiles used by your browser > IE extra > Internet options > delete temp Internet files
3. try/download a program like "Clean Disk Security v 7.51 " from www.theabsolute.net/sware

Might help if it is not a hardware bottleneck.

First you must clear the cache so you can optimize your shaders again.

It's in your Battlefield 2 folder in: C:\Documents and Settings\***USERNAME***\My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache

Also turn off shadows and leave everything else at medium, you may want to lower lighting as well. The verification time should have dropped dramatically from what it was. The loading time relies on your harddrive so you should defragment it to save on seek/read times so it reads the data sequentially instead of jumping all over the place for bits and pieces.

Also make sure you don't have dust crammed into your CPU and videocard heatsinks. Uaw a vacuum or blow it out with compressed air. Shut down any unnecessary processes like MSN Messenger, WinAmp, and anyting that is on your system tray (the little icons beside the clock). Open Task Manager to close even more unnecessary processes to free CPU and memory.

my video is a 6600GT PCI-E and I have 2 GB DDR RAM

I have no problems at all, man. U must have fucked up your Windows, firewall or something like that.

You, of course, ought to realize that your System Ram has nothing to do with the settings you can put your video to -- that's all video card dependant.

Also, additionaly ram will only help on the SECOND map load (eg, once a serious portion of the data is already IN memory.) To combat the first map load lag, you need faster hard drives.

all of mine is on medium with the last one in the settings on high (something to do with terrain), i only have a 2ghz cpu and 1gb of ram with my 6600gt slightly overclocked

hmm a new prosessor would work a 3000+ or higher. and put teh dynamic light etc on low or out that helps alot

1.5 gigs of ram ? 3 x 512 sticks or 1 x 1024 = 1 x 512
I have a feeling you have mismatched sticks and or problem ram.
run memtest to see if the ram is working properly...

yeah... i think arson has the right diagnosis. mismatched ram modules (i.e. not dual channel) will make a bigger difference on an intel chip. athlon chips have the memory controller right on the cpu so latency is not a huge factor. try removing your old 512 stick and run only on the new pair.

How much available physical memory do you have left before loading BF2? What other apps are running at load time? And what others have said, clear your cache and defrag. Best of all, check out tweakguides.com. Lastly, make sure Anti-Aliasing, Anistropic Filtering, Vertical sync are application controlled

How old is the WIndows installation?

How many programs do you have running in your task bar?
