I'm going to do that soon - damn phone speaker/top area of phone makes whiny high-pitched sounds sometimes.  It's a common problem with 3Gs, but mine is just 3G.

I had a second-gen iPod nano four years ago that conked out on me. I did exactly that, and it worked. I think Apple's tech support should include this in their guides.

Guy I know used to work for Apple out in SF, told me there was a guy in the store who used to 'fix' iPods by whacking them on a table. They worked for a day or two again, then died. Apparently it was quite a common thing they did, even if it wasn't officially sanctioned.
